?IU women's soccer adds senior defender via transfer

The IU women’s soccer defense—which had its best statistical season in five years last year having allowed just 25 goals—may have just gotten stronger.

Former Central Michigan defender Emily Basten has transferred to IU and will enroll in classes beginning in January 2015, IU Coach Amy Berbary announced. Basten, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will be available for the 2015 season.

“We are thrilled to be adding a very experienced defender to our roster this spring,” Berbary said in an IU Athletics release. “Emily’s energy and enthusiasm could prove to be contagious within our team and can help us achieve our post season goals.”

Getting back to the Big Ten Tournament and beyond was something Berbary stressed at the end of a disappointing 2014 campaign that saw IU win only three Big Ten games. The Hoosiers finished 7-11-1 overall after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Berbary’s first season with the team.

Basten, a native of Hoffman Estats, Ill., could potentially be a piece that makes that happen.

She had 42 starts and appeared in 54 games for the Chippewas over three seasons. As a defender with CMU, she was a part of 26 shutouts, including seven in 2014.

Basten was a team captain for CMU last year and recorded her first career points with a pair of assists on game-winning goals.

Off the soccer field, Baston has competed internationally in Tae Kwon Do and has a second-degree black belt. She was the Illinois State Champion gold medalist seven times and competed in the U.S. competition for Tae Kwon Do.

Baston was an advocate for student-athletes at CMU. She represented the school at the MAC Leadership Symposium twice and was on the school’s student-athlete advisor committee the last two seasons. She was also one of the student-athlete representatives on the CMU Athletic Department Committee which aimed to provide the student-athletes a voice within the department.

A 2013 Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention, Basten intends to major in Neuroscience at IU.
