IU lands four commits, hosts visits over weekend

Head coach Kevin Wilson watches from the sidelines as IU loses to Penn State, 13-7, on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Whenever IU Coach Kevin Wilson picks up a verbal commitment, he takes to Twitter to tweet out “#Boom.”

Wilson can’t comment directly on recruits, but the #Boom serves as a hint that a commitment is on the way.

There were four #Booms Sunday as IU’s 2015 recruiting class grew to 14.

Hyattsville, Md., safety Tyler Green, St. Louis offensive guard DaVondre Love, Carmel, Ind., athlete Isaac James and Woodbridge Va,. athlete Mike Majette each committed to Indiana on Sunday.

After losing two commits to Big Ten rivals last month, IU added three members to its 2015 recruiting class, each capable of filling holes in the IU roster, over a matter of hours.

“I’m so stoked!” 2015 commit Austin Dorris said via text. “This class just keeps getting better and better!”

Green, a 247Sports composite 4-star safety, decommitted from Ohio State on Tuesday night before opting to verbally commit to IU Coach Kevin Wilson’s Hoosiers on Sunday.  The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Green was ranked the nation’s No. 17 safety according to 247Sports .

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Love is rated a 2-star prospect by R ivals.com and committed shortly after news of Green’s commitment broke out. He said his recruiting picked up a bit after IU upset Missouri in September.

He said he had a good idea that he would commit to IU, and his official visit over the weekend sealed the deal.

James, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete, played receiver in high school and could do the same for IU. He was ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 41 athlete and No. 8 overall prospect in Indiana.

The 3-star prospect had also been recruited by Big Ten rivals Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Majette played quarterback and safety in high school and is projected to be a defensive back. The 5-foot-11, 195 pound Majette is listed as a 3-star athlete by 247Sports, A former Maryland commit, Majette and the Terps parted ways when Majette opted to decommit Dec. 8.

According to a report from the Baltimore Sun Times, Maryland rescinded its offer after Majette visited IU without notifying them.

Majette is the fifth commitment in the past week for IU. Former UAB wide receiver Marqui Hawkins committed to the Hoosiers on Wednesday.

Three previously committed Hoosiers — safety Andre Brown, offensive lineman Brandon Knight and offensive lineman Simon Stepaniak — were among those on official visits. While the three have already verbally committed, nothing is final until signing day in an era of football that often sees players flip commitments at this time of the recruiting season.

"Official went great," Knight said via text. "(It was) very organized and always something to do. With the commits today, it's bringing momentum to our class...Can't wait to get down here with the guys and compete for a Big Championship."

But by the end of the weekend, IU’s recruiting class had grown by four. The added commitments had previous commits excited and optimistic about the 2015 class’ future.

“I’m not surprised at all (that IU picked up the new commits),” 2015 commit Omari Stringer said via text. “I knew IU classes would improve drastically like Coach Wilson preached. More is to come. IU is a great place with great people."

A few commits hinted at more commitments to come and were optimistic that IU would be filling a few more of the 11 remaining scholarship positions with strong commitments in the upcoming weeks.

Signing a full class was exactly what Wilson said he intended to do following IU's season-ending win against Purdue. He said bringing in a talented group of players was vital for the future growth of the program.

"In reality, we got a program that's been very, very close," Wilson said. "It's coming. I think we withstood a pretty good gut shot this year. We need one or two more classes to back it up, and I think this will be a huge year for this program in recruiting, because if we can back up a core with the seniors coming back  —  we lose some good seniors and whatnot, but the guys coming back, the youthfulness of the freshmen, sophomore talent  — if we can put a class we need together, it's going to be pretty good."
