Coleman named finalist for Doak Walker Award

IU junior running back Tevin Coleman was named one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Tuesday. The award honors the nation's best running back.

Two other Big Ten players, Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah and Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon, join Coleman as finalists.

Coleman is the second Hoosier in program history to be recognized as a finalist, the other Vaughn Dunbar in 1991. In a loss to Ohio State last week, Coleman passed Dunbar as the all-time single-season rushing leader at IU. He is now 94 yards shy of becoming the 18th player in FBS history to reach 2,000 yards rushing in a season.

Coleman's 1,906 yards are second nationally. He is also second in rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards and all-purpose yards per game, among other categories.

The recipient of the Doak Walker Award will be announced at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 on ESPN, and the award will be presented at the 2014 Doak Walker Presentation Banquet in Dallas on Feb. 27.
