Indianapolis introduces new fleet of electric cars

Indianapolis will look a little greener come 2016 when it deploys the nation’s largest municipal fleet of electric vehicles, according to a press release from the City of ?Indianapolis.

The vehicles are part of a new program directed by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard aimed at helping to reduce the country’s oil dependency and save taxpayers millions.

“This is a landmark step in revitalizing our aging fleet and replacing expensive internal combustion engine vehicles with cutting-edge EV (electric vehicle) technology,” Ballard said in the release.

The initiative also includes a partnership with Vision Fleet, which is a full-service accelerator of large-scale alternative fuel vehicle adoption in the United States.

Vision Fleet was able to create a finance structure capable of keeping the rate of the plan’s integration lower than the cost of Indy’s ?gasoline sedans.

The fleet will include 100 percent electric models and plug-in hybrids.

In addition, Indy will replace 100 vehicles by the end of 2014 and 425 vehicles by 2016, according to the release.
