Looking to end a seven-game losing skid, IU volleyball faced the wrong team to do so Sunday as No. 4 Wisconsin visited Bloomington. The Badgers came in as the only unbeaten team in the Big Ten, and they showed the Hoosiers why.

Since head coach Steve Aird’s arrival at IU, matches with Purdue have become a lot closer than they have been in the past. Going into Wednesday night’s matchup against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana, the last three meetings between the rivals had gone to five sets, including a narrow two-point victory for Purdue earlier this season.

After losing a pair of home matches over the weekend, the IU volleyball team is back in action Wednesday, against No. 16 Purdue. The two in-state rivals met earlier this season in Bloomington, with Purdue coming out on top by the slimmest of margins in five sets.

It was a new weekend but the same story for IU volleyball in Big Ten play. With No. 5 Nebraska and Iowa visiting Bloomington for a pair of matches, the Hoosiers continued their recent trend by suffering two hard-fought losses.

There was a time in late September when the IU volleyball team sat at 11-2, coming off seven straight victories. But that was before a Big Ten play. Now, after going through a gauntlet full of ranked opponents, IU is only 12-9 and lost its last six matches, still looking for a second breakthrough conference win.

Much like its last match at Maryland, IU volleyball took the first set from Iowa on Sunday afternoon but failed to translate it into a win. After a 25-20 win in set one, the Hoosiers were outscored by the Hawkeyes 76-50 in the final three sets.

Despite taking the first two sets against Maryland, IU volleyball failed to seal the deal Wednesday night. The Terrapins battled back on their home court and handed the Hoosiers their third straight conference loss and sixth in total.

For the second time in eight days, IU and No. 17 Illinois squared off Saturday night, this time in Champaign, Illinois. Once again, Illinois handled the Hoosiers in straight sets — 25-10, 25-13, and 25-14.

Last weekend, IU head coach Steve Aird mentioned a recent lack of competition in the IU-Purdue volleyball rivalry. It was one that he hopes to rejuvenate, resulting in more “barnburner” matches.

Following a 1-1 weekend, the IU volleyball team is back in action for its first Wednesday night game of the season as No. 20 Purdue visits Wilkinson Hall. Later this month, the two teams will face each other again in West Lafayette.

After opening up conference play against three ranked opponents, two of which were road games, IU had its best chance thus far to earn a Big Ten victory Saturday night against Northwestern at home. Ultimately, the Hoosiers were able to do so, knocking off the Wildcats in four close sets - 26-24, 25-22, 21-25, and 27-25.

Late in the first set of its Big Ten home opener Friday, IU found itself down eight points to yet another ranked Big Ten opponent, this time No. 18 Illinois. The Hoosiers didn’t quit, as they cut the lead in half and fought back to 24-20. Still, the Fighting Illini survived by winning the set, and they never looked back from that point on.

For the first time since Sept. 8, the IU volleyball team plays in Bloomington against No. 18 Illinois on Friday for its home conference opener. On Saturday, IU takes on Northwestern, also at home. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.

In its opening weekend of Big Ten play, IU dropped matches against top 15 opponents on the road. The Hoosiers lost in straight sets to Minnesota and in four sets to Wisconsin.

Before the season started, IU head coach Steve Aird said he hoped to see his new-look team snatch somewhere between eight and 10 wins in the non-conference schedule. As it turns out, his team has won more than 10, as IU picked up three more wins this weekend to improve to 11-2 on the year.
