The Indiana Violent and Sex Offender Registry, as recently as Tuesday afternoon, lists Robert E. Lee’s location as within the Indianapolis parole district.

Lee now resides in a room at America’s Best Inn, 4585 S. Harding St. in Indianapolis, according to the registry. The inn is about 45 miles north of Bloomington.

When Lee was first released from prison last month, he was turned away from Backstreet Missions, as well as a second, unknown Bloomington location. Following the rejections and local outcry, Lee was moved to Jennings County, where he boarded with a 59-year-old violent sex offender in Muscatatuck Caverns outside Butlerville, Ind.

On Oct. 1, he was moved yet again.

Lee was moved out of the parole district, which consists of 21 counties including Monroe County, to the Indianapolis parole district.

In 1987, Lee was convicted of the murder and dismemberment of Ellen Marks, a 31-year-old IU graduate student.

He was also convicted in 1973 of a rape in New York. Lee served 25 years of a 60-year prison sentence for the murder conviction, but he was released early on the basis of good-time credit and furthering his education.

Lee was released on Sept. 22 in Bloomington to serve his year-long parole.
