New Hope Family Shelter is the only emergency shelter in Monroe County that keeps families experiencing homelessness together, and now it’s looking to expand.
On Saturday, community members will support New Hope and its first 5K Run/Walk, Run for Hope, beginning at 10 a.m. at the B-line Trail, 301 W. Second St., according to a release.
Registration and check-in begins at 8 a.m., with a $20 entry fee and a free T-shirt. The race is open to all members of the community, regardless of age.
The race was originally the idea of Kellie Miles, a runner who volunteers at New Hope who wanted to contribute to the shelter in her own way.
“As a volunteer at New Hope Family Shelter, I too have found a home,” she said in the release. “Each family I have met at New Hope has led me to become even more invested in ensuring the success of our programs.”
New Hope works with other local agencies to help families affected by homelessness. It accommodates three families at a time for up to 90 days each, but it plans to expand to an additional facility this year.
