In less than 24 hours' time, Derek Drouin will try to become the first Hoosier athlete to medal at the London Olympics.
A junior high jumper at IU, Drouin clinched his spot in Tuesday's finals by clearing 2.29 meters on his third attempt. The jump was second-best in qualifying Group A, nabbing Drouin one of 14 spots in the finals.
In total, Drouin cleared four bars on Sunday, including the lowest bar of 2.16 meters on his first attempt. After a pair of misses at 2.21 meters, Drouin came up with a clutch clear on his third attempt. He then cleared 2.26 meters on his second attempt, setting the stage for the clinching jump.
In Group A, Drouin trailed only Erik Kynard of Kansas State, who cleared 2.29 meters with fewer total misses. Drouin is competing for his native Canada and Kynard for the U.S.
Drouin needed to place within the top 12 to advance. A three-way tie for 12th put 14 jumpers into the finals.
The finals are scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.
