Sunday, which was also Earth Day, marked the start of the third annual Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale. The sale’s objective is to save reusable items from going into landfills.

Students can donate used clothing, furniture, housewares, books and electronics to the sale. This prevents wasteful dumping of goods when students leave their place of residence and raises funds for United Way of Monroe County and Habitat for Humanity.

New this year, Forest Quad will throw a Green Your Moveout Party from 5 to 7 p.m. May 1., aiming to raise awareness of the potential good that comes with donating unwanted items. Students can bring items directly to the event for donation.

Later this summer, a sale of the collected goods to students and community members will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Last year, Hoosier to Hoosier gathered about 27 tons of material from residence halls, greek houses, apartment complexes and individual donors. It also raised more than $17,000 for United Way and Habitat, about $7,000 more than its inaugural 2010 sale.

The sale unites the City of Bloomington’s Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, Habitat for Humanity, IU Athletics, the IU Office of Sustainability, IU Residential Programs and Services and United Way in partnership.
