The Cleveland Orchestra will be having their first IU residency from Jan. 24 to 26.

The orchestra will play at 8 p.m. Jan. 25 at the IU Auditorium.

Select students from the Jacobs School of Music will get the chance to perform with members of the orchestra in a side-by-side rehearsal on Jan. 24, according to a press release.

The School of Music is going through the process of auditioning all orchestra and band students in the next few days.

The outcome of these auditions will determine who has the opportunity to practice with the Cleveland Orchestra, said Thomas Wieligman, staff member of Jacobs.

“Our partnership with this magnificent ensemble will provide our students with opportunities to learn from and interact with some of the world’s top classical musicians, who promise to deliver an exciting and memorable performance at IU Auditorium,” IU President Michael McRobbie said in the press release.

Along with the concert on Jan. 25 that is open to the public, the residency will include educational activities such as orchestra repertoire classes, coaching workshops and arts administration seminars, according to the press release.

“The Jacobs School has a long-standing and significant association with The Cleveland Orchestra,” Jacobs Dean Gwyn Richards said. “Faculty have come to us from the Orchestra and Jacobs School alumni have held positions in its ranks, including the recent appointment of IU alumnus Mark Kosower as principal cello.”

The concert will showcase works by R. Strauss, Wagner and Bartók, according to the release and will be directed by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst.

“We are thrilled to present Indiana University’s groundbreaking partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra, which will prove to be not only an incredible opportunity for IU to celebrate the finest in classical music, but also a remarkable model for multidisciplinary student interaction,” IU Auditorium Director Doug Booher said in the release.
