article STORY: Meet your 21st century soldiers

Monroe County Courthouse rotunda:
10 a.m.
The event will include a POW/MIA empty chair ceremony, guest speakers retired U.S. Army colonels Turner Nolan and Theodore Rex Legler II, the laying of wreaths, a reading of names of veterans who died in the past year, an honor guard salute and Taps. Following the event, the refurbished Vietnam War Memorial on the courthouse lawn will be rededicated.

Arlington Elementary School:
10:30 a.m.
Veterans Day ceremony that will include a presentation of colors, recognition of local military service member Lindsey Smith, a performance by the Lighthouse Christian Academy’s Advanced Band and guest speaker State Rep. Peggy Welch.

American Legion Post 18, 1800 W. Third St.:
1 p.m.
There will be a flag retirement program where American flags will be retired properly by burning.

AMVETS Post 2000, 5227 W. Airport Road:
5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Free dinner for veterans.

Veterans’ Memorial Plaza at the fairgrounds, at Gate 3:
6 p.m.
Event will include the posting of the American and POW/MIA flags, the singing of the National Anthem and Taps.
Tents will be erected in case of inclement weather, and the Red Cross will serve coffee and hot chocolate.
