Purdue-IU cancer effort gets $1 million grant

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Cancer researchers at Purdue University and Indiana University are getting a $1 million boost to train a new generation of scientists.
The 5-year grant from the Walther Cancer Foundation will be split between Purdue’s Oncological Sciences Center and IU’s Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.
The grant will fund a new program through the IU-Purdue Cancer Care Engineering project to help pay for exchanges of medical fellows, engineers and scientists between the two schools.
Purdue and IU will each invest an additional $250,000 in the project. Its goal is to train postdoctoral fellows at IU’s clinics and for medical fellows to work at Purdue’s laboratories.
School officials say getting medical fellows and engineering and physical sciences postdoctoral fellows to work jointly on cancer research will lead to new cancer treatments.
