Everyone loses in Knight’s absence

POSTED AT 12:13 AM ON Nov. 6, 2009 | PRINT | Email | SHARE | COMMENTS (34)

This was the chance to make everything right.

The chance for Bob Knight and IU to finally put an end to nine years of bitter posturing. The chance to put pettiness aside and forgive and forget one another.
The chance for Bob Knight to be a Hoosier again.

Instead, Texas Tech’s former coach – a title he likely prefers – declined IU’s olive branch last week, choosing to skip his own IU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame induction in fear of causing a media commotion and stealing the spotlight from this year’s other inductees.

What a gesture. How considerate.

Could Knight possibly think that Hoosier fans – mind you, the same Hoosier fans he won three national championships and 661 games for – would prefer to sit through a halftime ceremony in which Joe Schmoe gets his 15 seconds instead of finally making amends with the winningest coach in Division I history who left nine years ago and hasn’t uttered IU’s name since?

Really?

Call him stubborn, call him petty, call him whatever you want (I hear he likes “Coach Knight” and “Mr. Knight”). The sad reality, as an IU administrator or two could tell you, is that Knight is going to get what he wants. The man gave his retirement speech with Sinatra’s “My Way” playing in the background. Do you think he is going to come back to the University that wronged him on someone else’s terms?

Unlikely. The recent passing of Knight’s most despised rival – the one who exiled him to Lubbock – could not even bring The General back to his old company. IU Athletics Director Fred Glass’ efforts were valiant, but in vain.

Unfortunately, most deep-seeded disputes such as this one typically are not resolved until all parties are set to be buried six-feet under. Why humans choose to hold grudges for so long is beside my minimal wisdom, but if there was one I could ever end, it would be this one.

It is a shame Bob Knight is not coming back to Bloomington, and not just because IU Athletics would love to sell some tickets to Saturday’s game.

Indiana needs Knight. We can no longer compete in this never-ending staring contest. Imagine John Wooden disowning UCLA or Joe Paterno turning his back to Penn State.

It would be devastating, as was Knight’s departure. While IU Basketball is back on track aboard the Tom Crean Machine, it will never be whole without the man who invented it. The court is named after Branch McCracken, but everything from the popcorn to the banners in Assembly Hall should be named after Knight.

Indiana will forever be synonymous with Bob Knight, but if the coach has his way, they will likely also remain anonymous for the foreseeable future. His $75,000 no-thank-you last week is plenty indication his anger toward the University is still as red as the sweater he once coached in.

But there isn’t much more IU can do. Myles Brand is no longer on campus, nor are Ron Felling, Murray Sperber, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson or a handful of other people he wished abroad. The University messed up when it made details of his settlement with the school public, but that’s a fairly minor misstep in the spectrum of his wrongdoings.

There’s a difference between no one winning and everyone losing, and this one is clearly the latter.

This Saturday, IU is set to induct Knight into its Hall of Fame without him present. To borrow the coach’s favorite word, it is a “travesty” that the chance to make everything right once again eludes Knight and the University.

What a shame.

For my first 10 years as a Hoosier, the battlecry during every football season was,'Wait till basketball season'. For the last 10 years as a Hoosier, the battlecry during football AND basketball season has been, 'Wait till soccer season'......Not sure what we'd have to cheer for without Yeagley and his 6 championships.

I agree with you Steve King. In the photo of the Hall of Fame inductees. I saw their picture but saw no names under the photo. Sigh, bb

Can you please show some resepect and write the accomplishments of each of the Hall of Fame Inductees. Personally I would like to know about them. Knight screwed up and was never able to come to terms with it. Wah..Wahh...Waaa.. Get over it. Great coaching career but it was his own lack of self control that hurt him. Indiana did not want to lose him. He forced their hand. Tradition is great but not when your always looking backwards. Bring on the future!!! Tom Crean is breaking ground and building. Go Hoosiers!!!

Don't make too much of my vile words...My comments only serve to create the same illusion of Dollinger's editorial...I think Dollinger is an excellent journalist.. I'll forgive him for the sensationalism if he forgives me for the blasphemous acting job...My remarks were purposely over the top and I apologize if for putting his true character in question....But do you honestly believe the creators of this HOF circus share in your pretend naiveté?

A lot of mud was slung at Mr. Knight... I’m not a Knight lover…Thought the guy made some very stupid missteps during his time at IU…I don’t care about healing old wounds…What’s wrong with a little scar tissue? The guy was a great coach.. Why can’t we leave it at that? Dollinger had to expect some of his mud to hit the fan and blow back in his face....I think he was hoping for it..I was glad to see it….indicates they still have a few readers scattered about...I like reading the IDS….The ice is getting dangerously thin in the newspaper world. I'm not nearly skilled enough to work in Dollinger's profession....Though in these precarious times, I'm not sure how many want to walk to the office in his shoes. Congrats on your awards, Matt...I wasn't aware. …

I think everybody is missing the big picture of this article: Everybody loses in Knight's absence. I don't think the author is saying none of the other inductees are important, just that everybody would benefit in putting this rivalry to rest. It's more important for Knight to accept the apology than for him to not overshadow others' accomplishments.

Clearly you don't understand that Coach Knight did not want to upstage his fellow inductees. Joe Paterno and John Wooden were not fired by their schools, so that comparison is a poor one. This was not a last chance with Knight. I envision a re-naming ceremony in Assembly Hall, the most appropriate venue for a well-deserved honor and happy reunion.

contrived, did you call matt dollinger a two bit journalist? one of those bits must be his AP COLLEGE SPORTS STORY OF THE YEAR AWARD and the other must be his current gig writing for the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS. i bet you would love to have those two bits, but instead you have no wits. you just throw fits. get a life.

Correction: "They are old men in young skin with nothing fresh to offer; instead of setting their own course and building their own foundation, all they can give us is Bobbygate. Where's Deep Throat?" What a shame.

And may this fine work by Almond Glitter be his IDS Hall of Fame moment. This attempt by Glass & Co. was complete failed manipulation...Bury ‘The General’, stick him in a wax museum, memorialize, erect a bronze statue, rename Assembly's floor...God, it's all such a massive bore...Even the oldest of fans had completely distanced themselves from memories of Knight-until this ingenious flop...Has IU Basketball grown this insecure? It makes us look so weak...That's the shame, Dollinger...We've become weak. I wanted so much to see Crean come into Indiana and treat our basketball history as if it were chicken liver..I wanted him to be light and a breath of fresh air...I wanted him to be the Barack Obama of Hoosier hoops..I wanted change...I was hoping we were done with the past, done with turmoil...I wanted him to talk of what he did at Marquette and how Indiana can reinvent its basketball tradition...I wanted something different and I was hoping for a persona that matched his youthful image...

(cont) Everything finds its purposeful time. Why was the administration so consumed with force-feeding the fans a Hall of Fame circus act to bring Knight back to town? I've heard all the standard answers..Come on, Dollinger...You can rise above the standard litany..."Reunite the fans with their Eminence"...blah..blah...blah….Nobody cared! Journalists should do better in my opinion...This Athletic Department and Indiana Basketball wanted to blast Bobby out of a cannon during a Memorial Stadium halftime show....Why? Answer: Because very few men achieve enough to even cast a tiny shadow...Forced to walk in another because their void of original ideas to make their own unique road to achievement...they need to create a bright enough light on themselves to wash out the one they truly envy...a constant and haunting fear they will always be overshadowed...Can’t shoot Knight out of a cannon? Let others take over the duties and use words of dignity to shoot him in the back...Boy, oh boy...You think Glass & Co. didn't see your move coming?...Knight’s ego is not so enormous that it entirely swallowed his brain. He saw the men breaking into his house of tradition and sneaking about the dark rooms of his reputation have likely never spoken three words to his face. They’re young men in very old skin with nothing fresh to offer; instead of setting their own course and starting their own foundation, all they could give us was Bobbygate. Where's Deep Throat?

All of you trying to make mud of this article need to get off your high horse. The fact is that Bobby Knight had a chance to put away all of the bad terms that he has had with the University since he left IU. Let's not forget that while he won 3 national championships, multiple winning seasons and graduated his players, he continuously spat in the face of the NCAA and did not think anyone, like Myles Brand, would stand up to him. Well, they did - like it or not. Now, all of the major players in that situation have left IU, retired or are dead. Honestly, grow up, make amends and put that stuff in the past. Both sides were less to be desired in that situation. Furthermore, no need to criticize Dollinger for his column. First of all, it's a column - it's his opinion. This is incredibly different than straight news article. There is no slander, and having read Dollinger's work, he has always been a splendid reporter. Just because you do not like the opinion of the writer does not mean you automatically attack his credibility. Shame on those of you for doing so.

It is a shame but one that could have been avoided had the university had trustees with backbone. To take the word of a little snot who dis-respected Coach Knight and had HIS feelings hurt is beyond me. The whole incident with Neil Reed was evidence enought that Coach Knight was right and that Neil Reed lied. I don't know how many people would choke someone with one hand and so low on the neck but several b-ball players have been "moved" back to their defensive position on a b-ball court. Coach Knight should have sued Reed for liabel since the video proved that several coaches were not needed to pull Coach Knight off of him and he never lost conscience as he claimed. I.U. handled this badly from the start and I refused to donate as has Cuban of the Mavs. Since all of those trustees with no backbone are now gone I have begun to donate to my alma mater again.

Very shallow to use your paper in this manner, Dollinger..Very shallow to spit in all the other inductees faces...My first great IU memories are intertwined in the gallant efforts of Steve Downing at a Final Four in 1973...He deserves far better than some two-bit journalist ignoring his career accomplishments at IU in favor of puddle splashing words of mud on his former coach. Freedom of press be your right to say f*** it, I like most often your words of choice, but this time it felt fake and contrived, sounded trash bucket.

i read this article because i like reading about knight... and while i am not a sports fan i dont know anything about soccer. while the comment was a little harsh, i think the bigger picture is overlooked here. we are talking bobby knight, arguably the most famous, and at least the most interesting, college basketball coach choosing to turn his back on a school that desperately wants to make good in the situation. what bobby knight seems to be missing is that while he may hate the administration at IU, the fans, who had NOTHING to do with his release, miss him. he should man up and acknowledge the thousands of hoosiers who continue to honor him.

"but nobody outside the IU family or soccer circles knows anything about Yeagley." Yeah, well, this is the IU Hall of Fame induction, right? What do we care what people outside the IU family think?

Posted by Engel at 3:14 PM on Nov 06, 2009 | Report this comment

You people crack me up. Makes me miss the days getting hate posts on the old Basketblog. I bet Dolly knows more about IU basketball/IU athletics than everyone who has posted on here combined. Scratch that, I know he does. Yeagley is a great coach (and an even nicer person to talk to/interview), but the fact is that the combined accomplishments of everyone being coming to the Hall of Fame ceremony pale in comparison to what Knight did at IU. Winning soccer championships is great (and nobody loves soccer more than I do - I played it for 14 years and covered it for the IDS), but nobody outside the IU family or soccer circles knows anything about Yeagley. Everyone knows about Knight.

Six national championships for Jerry Yeagley who is considered by many as one of the greatest collegiate soccer coaches in history, if not the greatest. "Joe Schmoe"??? Do your homework and don't diminish the accomplishments of other Hall inductees because you feel there needs to be another article about Coach Knight and IU coming to terms with each other. I'm a huge RMK fan, but Jerry Yeagley's career is every bit as impressive and he has served as a great ambassador for IU Athletics and the University.

Who is Bobby Knight? Is he the guy that hasn't made it past the sweet sixteen since 1993? Maybe Fred Glass actually called him to let him know that he wasn't actually being inducted into the hall of fame. Congrats to Coach Yeagley, 6 national championships without choking any of his players.

Did you refer to Jerry Yeagley as Joe Schmoe? And to Erin, how many names in the HOF do you know? Mark Spitz, maybe? For those of you who don't know (and that obviously includes the moron that wrote this piece), Coach Yeagley won six National Championships...SIX, not three, SIX. He, also, has more wins than anyone else in collegiate soccer. He's a toatal class act (I'm not saying anything against Knight, here), too. Matt, if my wife finds out about your diss on Downing, you'd better hide....

Brilliant work, the nay-sayers are just as stubborn as this Robert Knight you speak of. Maybe everyone should grow up. And for what it's worth, I have NO IDEA who Jerry Yeager is, therefore, to everyone but avid Hoosiers who are willing to waste their time writing paragraphs on this article, he is a Joe Schmoe.

Matt, (the poster below, not this article's author) Thank you for reminding us that this is not about whether Coach Knight attends the ceremony, but rather is a time for recognizing all who go above and beyond for this university. Read into it what you may, but I applaud Coach Knight's decision to refrain and let the other inductees bask in the spotlight that is unfortunately not often afforded to the non-revenue athletes on campus.

"While IU Basketball is back on track aboard the Tom Crean Machine" Now that made me laugh. Worst season IU basketball has EVER had in its 100+ history and you call that back on track? I'll have what your smoking. The board of trustees made their bed, now they have to sleep in it. My parents got divorced after 29 years of marriage back in 1998, and they still HATE each other. They don't talk to each other, and if one of them was to induct the other into the parent hall of fame you can bet the farm the other would have NO part of it. This university dragged RMK through the mud, did him wrong, and then acted like they had the right to destroy Indiana Basketball as we knew it. It was an ugly divorce, and from what I can tell, those don't just blow over in a few years.

Did you really just refer to Jerry Yeagley as "Joe Schmoe"?? That is the most ridiculous thing i have ever read. I would much rather have Jerry on campus than Knight anyday. I actually hope Knight never returns, we've moved on and so should you.

Indiana University will honor Coach Knight's accomplishments tomorrow with him or without him. If Coach ever wants to 'make everything right' with Indiana University, it will be on his terms and in his timeframe. The ball is in his court now.

There are so many inaccuracies in this article I don't even know where to begin. Most are so blatant that I won't even comment on them. As a journalist you should have your facts straight. Coach Knight never gave a retirement speech. He never officially retired, just resigned. The event you are referring to his when Coach Knight got his 880th win making him the winningest Division I coach. To celebrate the milestone he played "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. "I've simply tried to do what I think is best," Knight said. "Regrets? Sure. Just like the song. I have regrets. I wish I could have done things better at times. I wish I would have had a better answer, a better way, at times. But just like he said, I did it my way and when I look back on it, I don't think my way was all that bad."

Matt: You and your publisher should be ashamed of yourselves as journalists and as Hoosiers. Although many of your points are valid, your statement that IU will honor "Joe-Shmoes" into our hall of fame is classless and uneducated. Any Hoosier worth their while wishes Coach Knight was on better terms with the University (and everyone associated with it) but the fact of the matter is he has chosen a different path which he is more than entitled to. Instead of focussing on who isn't here, I strongly urge you to use your column to focus on those who are. The group inducted this weekend (in person) have accomplished more for this University than you or I could ever dream of and they deserve the recognition and respect associated with that. Coach Knight will never be a thing of the past, but he is certainly not relevant in the present or in the future to the success of IU. I will applaud with warm memories when they officially induct Coach Knight into the Hall this weekend, but I will also gladly give those "Joe-Shmoes" the recognition they deserve; they have earned it.

"His $75,000 no-thank-you last week is plenty indication his anger toward the University is still as red as the sweater he once coached in." Matt, Knight has always stated that he does not accept alumni/donor money for his own situation/well-being. He has always been a man committed to raising money, and accepting alumni money for other causes( Landon Turner, scholarships, etc). Knight is never going to back down on this issue. He is a man who's ego drives his everyday thinking. I was, and still am, a fan of Knight as a coach. But I cannot see a resolution to this situation anytime soon, even if the university publically stated that there was an obvious "wrongdoing" against Knight. Let's now go ahead and honor those OTHER inductees, who's accomplishments have been as much a part of this university, as Knight's accomplishments.

Posted by Jack at 8:59 AM on Nov 06, 2009 | Report this comment

" You've just proven Knight's point for him. The other inductees aren't "Joe Schmoes" and deserve a lot more respect, particularly from an IU publication. Maybe you should go research what each of them has done for the University (especially Jerry Yeagley, who had a great deal more success in soccer than Knight did in basketball), since it's clear you don't know. Instead, you choose to attack Knight for what is obviously the right decision, as you've shown in your piece. Classy.

Due to the fact he isnt ready I say FORGET him! Quit writing about him. I was an avid fan of his but this isnt the way an educator acts -- after all this time! If IU names their stadiumn after Knight then they will accept his behavior. If we had children that acted the way Knight does we would spank them and make them behave! What a shame but Bobby is doing it to himself! Dont name a stadium after him. Please if he cant forgive people that caused him some heartache and the main person is now dead and Bobby still wont forgive him---We shouldnt waste any more time on this man--GO CREAN
