IUSA amends Iran resolution

Given the recent political turmoil in Iran, student activists are now pushing the IU Student Association to show its support for Iranian students.

Jordan Jacobs, director of IUSA’s executive Department of International Affairs and an Indiana Daily Student columnist, went before the IUSA Congress on Tuesday night to present a resolution that would voice the group’s support for Iran.

Jacobs said Iran is undergoing profound political transformations and is facing major events that will greatly affect its future.

“This resolution could be the first of many steps,” he said.

Jacobs said it is important for the IU community of students to express solidarity with students in Iran.

He said that passing this resolution will also add to the political activism on the University level.

If the resolution would be passed, Jacobs said, IUSA could then urge other university student governments to pass similar endorsements. Jacobs said he plans to contact the student body presidents of all Big Ten schools.

After Jacobs presented his resolution, congress began a debate before a final vote. Many members emphasized that passing this resolution would not help the cause and that IUSA needs to focus on problems within IU’s campus.

Sophomore Seth Davis said IUSA is not surrendering its rights by voting for this but rather voting to support not taking other students’ rights away.

“All he’s asking is to have an opinion supporting human rights,” Davis said.

When the debate was brought to a close, senior Andrew Hahn moved to amend the resolution. He said he encouraged the Department of International Affairs to start a dialogue with other universities first and to strike the expression “solidarity” from the resolution.

“My idea would require a radical rewrite of this resolution,” Hahn said.

Shobha Pai, vice president of IUSA Congress, said the motion was to rework the resolution and bring it back before congress.

“They can bring the new resolution back at the next congress meeting and it will then be voted on,” Pai said.

As I said before, Anon, I am no fan of the current regime in Iran. The Iranian regime has been propped up by the US on many occasions, the Iran-Iraq War was a gift to the Mullahs, where the US backed Iraq and then backed both sides so that they can kill each other. Also Iran-Contra Affair, where the US sold weapons to Iran to support the Contra terror campaign in Nicaragua against the Sandinista regime (with the help of the Mossad, where the CIA is, the Mossad is not far behind). The US has been guilty of several human rights violations in Iraq and Afghanistan, why not condemn the American government? The Italians ruled that CIA agents were guilty of an illegal rendition (human rights violation), why not support the extradition order. Also Israel was guilty of great war crime during the Gaza bombing and is guilty of human rights violations everyday in Palestine, where's the resolution condemning it? Unfortunately, the IUSA, as well as the American public has been duped by the media to look elsewhere for human rights violations, we only have to look over our shoulders. It is all part of a propaganda campaign to march us to another dirty colonial war with Iran and this will not be an easy cake-walk because Iran has a real army unlike Iraq which was savaged since 1991. You want the Mullah regime to fall, no more interference by the West, let the people of Iran handle it. Interference will only prolong the life of the Mullah regime. That is why I am against this resolution, let the Iranian people decide their own fate.

I don't agree with Edward Vasquez. I think we should interfere with Iran for the sake of the MIlitary Industrial COmplex and for Israel. After all, I support Israel and the MIC a lot more than I support Iran. Yeah, if we can help Israel by screwing up Iran, I would do that in a heartbeat.

Dear Mr. Vasquez, I might suggest that your "guess" about the intentions of the IUSA is somewhat off the mark. In fact, the IUSA was merely entertaining a resolution that was being offered by consideration from members of the greater student community. As the representative body for IU at large, it doesn't seem appropriate to assume that because the IUSA entertained the resolution (and debated it, I might add) that they were engaging in CIA-like activities. There are other problems with that kind of analogy. The CIA conducts its actions behind the scenes, whereas this procedure was open to the public and reported in the press. This action is not meant to topple regimes or engage in covert action. As the gentleman cited in the article attested, this is merely meant to stand as a statement against human rights abuses. In addition, the resolution states that we stand in support of the Iranians but reject international interference along the lines of CIA-like activities. Just something to chew over...

I guess the IUSA is following into the CIA trap of getting the IU student body to support killing innocent Iranians for oil. The United States since 2005 has been interfering illegally with the internal affairs of Iran from supporting terrorist actions by the Mujahadin al Khalq to the Balachi terrorists. Yes, the Iranian regime is wretched but it has been supported by the US since 1979, with the October Surprise to Iran Contra. And the Mousavi/Rafsanjani is totally bought off by the CIA, chanting "Death to Russia" in its last display. This is digusting, these are not democratic forces, this is the CIA's Student Rich Kid Liberation Front. They are calling for their country to be bombed by Russia, becoming cannon fodder. The US should stop interfering in the internal affairs of Iran for the sake of the Military Industrial Complex and Israel.
