article STORY: Data Center to be dedicated Thursday

IU is celebrating its new $32 million data center built to protect computers from floods, power outages and even F5 tornados.

Hundreds of people are expected Thursday at the IU Data Center's formal dedication, which will include a reception and tours of the bunkered, concrete building.

The center houses IU servers, data storage units and computers, including supercomputers called Big Red and Quarry. It is also charged with protecting IU systems that handle course records, degrees and financial information.

The university says the new building is the largest data center among Indiana colleges.
