Bob Knight makes his final wave goodbye after asking the student body to bow their heads and wish the best for him and his family. The address was made to over six thousand students in Dunn Meadow on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000.

It’s official: Bob Knight will not attend the ceremony inducting him into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.

The University confirmed Knight’s planned absence in a press release today.

IU Athletics Director Fred Glass said Knight chose not to attend because he didn’t want to detract from other members of the 2009 induction class.

“Coach Knight expressed his tremendous appreciation for the support his teams were given by the IU student body and fans all over the state of Indiana and the contribution that support made to the success of his teams," Glass said.

"Coach Knight also noted that there is no one he appreciates more than his players, who he said were the most responsible for the success the program had during his tenure.”

At the ceremony, Knight will be represented by longtime friend and 2008 inductee Bob Hammel.

I understand why Knight is upset. But many of the people at IU who mistreated him are now gone or dead. Its Knight's decision what he wants to do, but I would think it would be in both his best interest and IUs best interest if the two can improve their relationship. IU doesn't need Knight and Knight doesn't need IU. But after nearly a decade, it is a shame that the relationship is still so sour.

I am a huge IU fan and was on campus when coach Knight was fired. As time goes on, I am begining to lose my love for coach Knight. He may have beef with a former administration at IU, but he takes it out on all of his supporters. When I see him on ESPN or CBS and everytime IU comes up he avoids it or gets angry.....or like this event where he avoids coming...it just makes me feel like he doesn't care about us as fans anymore. He says he cares...but actions speak louder than words. He needs to bury the hatchet as the University has under Fred Glass and lets get along together again.

If the real reason is not to distract from the other inductees, then Bobby should be invited to come back soon and give his belated thanks for the induction. That would make everyone happy!
