Liberal: A 4-letter word

I write this as a warning, a cautionary tale for you, but I mean not to scare you: Liberals are all around you, everywhere you go.

When you drive to go to work, and you hear that song you love (modern country and Lee Greenwood excluded), it was with 99 percent certainty written by a liberal. When you see the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest albums, it might as well be a list of 499 albums made by liberals and one Skynyrd album. There’s no alternative solution there. I mean, Journey and Foreigner are nowhere.

And as Fox News is quick to inform you, when you go to the movies, you’re paying to watch a movie starring and made by liberals, and perhaps Hollywood trophy conservative Jon Voight. When you go to an art museum to look at art, you’re again looking at the creations of a predominantly liberal group.

And, as certain members on the right wing are quick to point out, several teachers are liberal, too.

The phrase “indoctrination” is often used to describe what the teachers and other media sources of “liberal” America are doing.

And what are they doing? What is this indoctrination? It is teaching students facts based on science and empirical data, as opposed to superstition and fear of the unknown.

Liberalism tries to treat every human being as though they are worthy of  respect, regardless of skin color, sexual orientation or upbringing.

The reason that conservatives use this phrase so much when describing liberals isn’t because there’s a secret pamphlet the liberal conspiracy of high school teachers, professors and film directors hand out at graduations or movie theaters.

Conservatives have a strong bias against anything remotely liberal because, to them, liberals are a closeted group seeking to destroy America. The fact is that this culture battle possesses a certain essentially puritanical element. Many conservatives view anything less than a complete adherence to whatever they believe, be it creationism, the free market, school prayer or public nativity scenes, as part of a scheme by the indoctrination squad. They believe that there is a widespread attempt to discriminate against anyone with religious or conservative views. And that simply isn’t true.

No one forced Jon Voight to be in “National Treasure.” He wasn’t forced there by being blacklisted. Many of the founders of this nation would be considered huge liberals by modern-day conservatives.

Thomas Jefferson? Come on. All men created equal? What a crock...

Being liberal doesn’t mean you hate America. There is no more liberal agenda to destroy the family structure than there is an agenda of reptilians to control the world through secret human-reptile hybrids.

Unless of course, this reptile agenda is real, in which case, I, for one, welcome and acknowledge our new reptile overlords. You hybrids will need people to remind humans how thankful for your rule we should be, and I could provide that role.

The difference between a Liberal and a Conservative is that a Liberal sees the government as the solution, whereas a Conservative sees the governement as the problem.

[idiotarian sneered: "Being liberal doesn’t mean you hate America"] Just like wife beaters don't really hate their wives-- the belt was for her own good, right? Enter the Leftist-fascist Hall of Shame and feel their love. http://www.zombietime.com/hall_of_shame/

LEFT is the 4-letter word the author glosses over. Many Americans today inaccurately ascribe "liberal" to Leftists. Conservatives (the "right wing" the author sneers at) are advocates for "classical liberalism." Conversely, today's mislabelled "liberals" are merely Leftist statists of one breed or another. The idea that Leftists "treat every human being as though they are worthy of respect, regardless of skin color, sexual orientation or upbringing" is laughable on its face. Leftist racism can be seen in the way Leftist black students taunt those among them who strive for achievement as sellouts who are "acting white." Leftist racism can be seen in the unholy alliance between the Democrat Party, the National Education Association and other teachers' unions, and black spokesmen such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, to maintain their power by opposing school choice for black children trapped in violent and failing public schools. Leftist racism can be seen in the way black voters are kept on the welfare statist "plantation" through scare tactics and attacks on "race traitors" such as Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, who have defied the party line. Leftist racism can be seen, paradoxically, most clearly in the way anyone straying from its premises is immediately branded as a "racist." Leftist racists use race as a bludgeon to control public discussion. Don't let them.

I would ask the author to ask themselves two questions. It could be about many things, but let's consider retirement savings. Are you smart enough to save for yourown retirement? Do you beleive others are smart enough to save for their own retirement? A conservative would answer yes to both, a liberal will answer yes to the first and no to the second. Thus we have Social Security. The statement "Liberalism tries to treat every human being as though they are worthy of respect, regardless of skin color, sexual orientation or upbringing" is simply not true. Liberals try to make every human equal and thus must move to the lowest common denominator. Conservatives beleive we are all created equal and then can become whatever we choose. Making our own choices and living with the consequences. The harder and smarter you work, you get to prosper as you see fit.

The problem, mandy, is that 'intelligent conservatives' don't really speak for the modern day GOP, so it's only natural that your voice is going to be drowned out by the the far right, which is the group largely in front of the microphone representing your party. If this is a problem for you, stop being offended by liberals who point out what they hear, largely coming from the far right side of your aisle, and start blaming that ignorant group for attempting to hijack and redefine conservatism.

This is moronic. I'm a conservative and I don't believe that "liberals are a closeted group seeking to destroy America." I believe liberals are often misguided, but not some kind of secret group. Get real. Moreover, when intelligent conservatives complain about "liberal indoctrination" they are not complaining about "teaching students facts based on science and empirical data, as opposed to superstition and fear of the unknown. " Again, get real. Intelligent conservatives who make these claims are arguing that liberal indoctrinators are ignoring facts that don't support their view, or are teaching the liberal side of a controversial issue as fact though there is a credible conservative side of the issue. Of course there are moron conservatives out there who think every liberal professor is trying to indoctrinate their kid or that anyone who challenges or questions conservative pieties is some kind of communist. But there are liberals of the same ilk: those get hysterical when some sort of liberal piety is questioned and those who think everyone who isn't liberal is some sort of sleaze. This editorial would be a lot stronger if it focused on the things that intelligent conservatives say instead of deflating the Rush Limbaugh types, who are such obvious frauds. Liberals would likely be upset if we judged them on the basis of things Michael Moore says: intelligent conservatives can respond to this editorial by simply noting that it has little to do with their positions.
