Seriously, people?

POSTED AT 11:53 PM ON Sep. 14, 2009 | PRINT | Email | SHARE | COMMENTS (18)

Before I get into the point of this article, I will come out and say that I am an Obama supporter.

Not only am I an Obama supporter, I spent most of last year working as an intern on the local Obama campaign.

It was one of the best times of my life. Even after the campaign and inauguration, I have remained active with the local and national political movement.

I say that to emphasize that I am not another blind and brainwashed Obama supporter jumping to his rescue.

But I have to address something.

A few weeks ago, I attended a Monroe County Democratic fundraiser dinner.

At this dinner Rep. Baron Hill told a brief story of an older woman coming up to him and sincerely asking him, “Are they really gonna kill us for being too old?”

The rumor of death panels is an idea that has been spread and perpetuated by health care enemies.

It says that the new plan calls for people to go around and basically tell old people if they are sick or well enough to live and give them a pill of sorts to help them die.

This would be funny if not for prominent Republicans such as Sarah Palin and others feeding into the idea, and if these weren’t the only attacks being levied on this administration.

Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are on personal campaigns to convince the public that Obama’s health care plans are the beginning of the president’s plan of taking over the government, turning it into a communist regime and going all Vladimir Putin on his critics.

Their followers have been seen all summer at town hall meetings turning what is supposed to be civic discussions about health care into events that should be hosted by Jerry Springer.

My favorite of all the claims is that Obama is the next Hitler and/or the anti-Christ and that we are all doomed in his hands.

I absolutely have no problem with anyone that criticizes the president.
In fact, I believe that public criticism of the president is necessary for a healthy democracy.

Hell, even I don’t agree with the president 100 percent and I have major issues with what I have heard about the health care reforms so far.

But resorting to some of the tactics that his opponents have in recent months is going to do nothing but get us nothing.

I know some will point out the harsh treatment and push back that George Bush received and say that this is justified.

But it is unjustified on both accounts. If you want to criticize the president, follow the lead of the tea party people who raised serious concerns about how to pay for all of this.

Or you can raise concern as to whether the public option will be run by another failing insurance company.

Or perhaps ask whether the politicians will take the time to do health care reform right.
See, there are plenty of things one could raise concerns about outside of convincing people that Obama is the devil in the flesh.

This is a huge moment in American history.

Health care has been a major problem for many Americans for years and years, including myself; I have lived the past five years without health care insurance.
If you think the president’s plan is a bad idea, that’s fine.

Express yourself.

I am sure the president isn’t trying to silence you. All I ask, especially of the educated Hoosier state, is to not feed into illogical theories and come up with good fact-based concerns and arguments.

Only then can the country as a whole finally get to something that will be beneficial for all.

Slavery? Elitist? Dude, seriously. Your point is taken and acknowledged, but they way you present it's just hard to read. Back to the ARTICLE and the content, aside from your petty insults...I'm just saying that America should move to Universal PREVENTATIVE coverage, like the majority of the other first world countries. Obviously they like it, and we have problems... Besides, a new study done by the New England Journal of Medicine reports that 60% of doctors would like a PUBLIC OPTION [and not necessarily everyone taking it.] As well as another 10% said they would prefer just having A NATIONAL SYSTEM. Americans are being fed the lies of corporate fatcats. Doctors, the people who take care of us, in the number of a little over 70% want a public option...shouldn't we a least listen?

Is Indiana University that Elitist that the students insist they will only communicate with Indiana University students. Speech Geek makes the point that I should be an IU student and that I must get to class to learn the use of the English language. I did not know that Speech Geek's only acceptable diversity is amongst those who are privileged to get accepted for a special scholarship, as if she earned the right to that money because her need and base talent were greater than others. I am sure at some point someone said that we were callus because people like speech geek could not get a scholarship and thus were denied access to college. I thought this forum was open to all. I thought we accepted less than well polished work since we common people lack an impotent editing staff such as the IDS's editors. Speech Geek don't you continue to patronize me. Your attempt to dismiss my arguments as half hearted attempts to invoke Darwin theories or as a failed slippery slope defense; is juvenile and lacks original thought. There is no moral imperative to provide health care to our fellow man, certainly not at the national level. Our Community organizer in Chief wants to force on a national level a form of slavery he could not achieve at the local level. This time though, the slaves are at a 1 to 1 ratio with the motive force of this nation vice 3/5ths. Obama and his team will continue to enslave the impotent low classes in this nation for the benefit of the intellectual liberal elite like the Kennedy’s.

Speech Geeks Foe writes "We need to ensure illeagles get health care." I agree. The eagle is our national bird, so an ill eagle should get health care.

It's not an emotional point, it's purely fiscal...and by the way...I have a full academic scholarship. You can't equate my Americanism with my level of education. Aren't you a student here? Please go to class, and stop butchering the English language. I worked for everything I have, like a good American can and should. You have valid points stemming from Darwinism, yet your slippery slope ideology does not work as a basis for argumentation.

CJ, you all claim that us tax payers paying for our fellow man is a moral imperitive. If we expand on your argument, we need to provide healthcare to the rest of the world. We need to ensure illeagles get health care. Part of the beauty of health care control is that not all people are permitted to stay alive to drain our society. It is the same as the pro choice argument; abort the fetus before it drains on our society.

@AntiNeoFascist--what business actively wants more regulation? And where do you get the idea that $12 an hour is the average Wal-Mart wage? Go rent "The High Cost of Low Price" or order it at http://www.walmartmovie.com. And then go drive around Bedford. There used to be a number of locally owned grocery stories. Now there's Wal-Mart and Jaycee (owned by Kroger). All the industry in the Bedford is gone. Thanks to an unregulated free-markey economy. @SpeechGeek's Foe--you give everyone access to health care, because its the right thing to do. I can't fathom how, as human being, you can be so callous as to just shrug and move on when confronted by the suffering of your fellow man.

Sorry I am not as educated as you. I am a true blooded American on the edge of the empire. My momma and daddy are not paying my college. Now shame on you for using your sister as an emotional device to try to further your argument. We as a society can choose to continue to appease the lower class and encourage them to accept a mediocre life and keep them enslaved to the community organizers of the political parties. In the foreign countries, you see the lower class actually scrambling and working to improve the opportunities of their prodgeny. There is no such thing as free lunch here. Subsiquently, there is no slavery as redefined by the great society in America. If the lower class in America wants out of the ghettos and off the hills of Apalacha, ignore the handouts that keep your kids a slave to the entitlement system.

LOL @ Speechgeek's foe. You have a horrible command of the English language, and completely misconstrued what I said. All I'm saying is that as a nation that constantly strives to be the best, and to be a leader, we need to do a better job of taking care of our own citizens. And my sister is NOT a drain on society. Your crass and completely uncalled for comments are atrocious.

Who exactly are "health care enemies"? I know lots of people who favor health care reform. I even know some real nut jobs who want to dismantle our existing healh care system and let the govenment run it. However, I do not know anyone who is an enemy of health care. Does these enemies refuse to brush their teeth and not wash their hands after dropping a deuce? Are they funded by the anti-soap lobby?

I give this article a B+, open statement of writers perspective, reasonable point, a few mis-targeted attacks (the posters portraying Obama as Hitler were primarily by LaRouche - a leftist), but a very reasonable request for action at the end. But the comment of CJ is the most interesting to me. The praise granted to Unions is, to say the least, exaggerated. To think that we'd all still be working 80 hour weeks in factories and that wages would never have risen over time is infantile. You are correct about one thing: Businesses don't have to have their customers best interests at heart. However, business will soon find, (unless they have a true monopoly), that treating their customers poorly in order to make that extra buck may grant them short term profits, but will not actually cost them much more in the long term. So in the free-market, a business that treats its employees and customers poorly will be replaced by a business that can provide better service. The problem with MORE govt involvement and regulations is that businesses try to control and influence that legislation to favor themselves and hurt their competition. Ask yourself why big companies want MORE costly regulations and restrictions on their industry if they are so greedy and profit seeking? It's because they want entry into the market by a new upstart to be as expensive as possible. And what is with this obsession with the belief that Wal-Mart is this evil empire? If they provide reasonable jobs for people (avg $12/hr) and cheap products, why are they horrible? Because mom and pop's shop who cannot handle the inventory and selection at the price Wal-Mart charges, is put out of business? I would be genuinely interested in reading about how a Wal-Mart truly "ruins" all these local economies.

I agree with Ramone. Not all should get access to health care. Let's change the law and if you show at the emergancy room without care you get turned away. Maybe your sister should have died and would now no longer be a drain on our society. OBTW, I am in the 3rd world trying to make a differance. It is sickening to see Americans claim that we have the worst in the world. Visit Asia, even Japan, and then make a judgement on American Health care. Englands health care... yeah great...really?

And I encourage government criticism, especially the criticism of the leaders of our government, because no one is perfect, and quite frankly, Americans in general are not involved enough. Our system is designed to give us the smallest influence possible on our government. But mindless harping and just stupidity was one of the fears of the founding fathers. But I think Obama and those who are for a public option raise an interesting point. After the worst war in history, the UK [in this case England in particular] created the NHS. Most other 1st world countries have a nationalized health care system. It works, [contrary to the hype] well even. And, it is less expensive. England spends 12% of it's GDP on healthcare and covers everyone, while we spend 17%...and cover 6/7. The math speaks for itself. Though criticism is important, it must be grounded in facts not fear, and honestly, even referring to something Sarah Palin says must knock your credibility down several notches...Pat Buchanan? Rush Limbaugh? They aren't even real Republicans, just party pin ups.

I thoroughly enjoy reading the comments of the Republican party's brainwashed. Do people not realize that we ALREADY HAVE SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE!! It's called "when people enter emergency rooms they are required by law (in many cases, not all) to treat them to stabilization." This is incredibly expensive and costs taxpayers billions EVERY YEAR. We can solve this problem by either making a public option where you have to have a SSN and legal documentation to get treated...or continue wasting billions. Take your pick. As for "death panels"...wake up, we already have them. They are called HMO's. Do you want a doctor deciding your health care, or a financial panel with a highly paid doctor, trained in the art of saying no? You choose. As for me, I have great health care, and an excellent doctor. But my baby sister was delivered 19 years ago, and you'd best believe the public paid for it, before my family HAD health insurance. She was born prematurely. I'll leave you to guess how much that cost. Either way, we're paying for it. We can do it the smart way, or the stupid way, but either way, we're going to pay. We might as well do it for American citizens in a timely and organized fashion, before it gets too far out of hand. Though being "active" in the government ranges in anything from complaining, to voting to interning to being a volunteer or even a government official, it's time for complaining to take a back seat and real action. I challenge everyone who is constantly harping about Obama to do something in their own backyard to make real change.

If there were never any unions, Ramon, you wouldn't be here at the university. You'd be working in a factory for 80 hours a week and pulling home a big paycheck of 15 cents. The notion that somehow business (and this applies to the health care industry too, because it's run like a business) has your best interests at heart is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. A self-correcting, free-market, unregulated enterprise works only in a vacuum void of human behaviour. Supply and Demand only works assuming company X doesn't backstab, bribe, beg, and steal their way through the competition. A self-correcting, free-market, unregulated enterprise works only if you believe in the unseen hand. And I don't know about you, but I can't remember the last time I saw God reach down and slap Wal-mart in the face for ruining local economies. Try applying that same logic to the police force. "Well, gee do we really need laws on the books and enforcement by government entities? No! I think everything will just magically correct itself"

That supposedly racist poster depicting Obama as the Joker? (An LA Weekly writer fumed, "The only thing missing is a noose.") That was created by a Palestinian-American supporter of left-wing garden gnome Dennis Kucinich. Whoops! Never mind. Leftists will keep trying until they find a scapegoat that works, because that is what they do.

Perhaps the smug intelligentsia of Indiana wacademia can muster some umbrage toward the racist SEIU goons who physically assaulted Ken Gladney at a St. Louis Town Hall. Five REAL thugs were arrested after the videotaped beating of Mr. Gladney. At least one of the Leftist attackers called him a n**ger before pummeling him to the ground and kicking him in the head and neck. http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2009/08/kenneth-gladney-files-hate-crime.html In addition, two volunteers trained by the Carnahan campaign, were arrested in connection with the SEIU racist beatings. http://www.24thstate.com/2009/08/carnahan-staffers-werent-arrested-but-were-their-volunteers.html This sort of thuggish political violence is what one would expect in Mussolini's Italy by the Black Shirts. This is pure fascism. Under White House staff exhortation to "punch back twice as hard," the SEIU is now sending out goon squads to beat people up who disagree with ObamaCare. Only a Special Prosecutor can determine if this was a Chicago-style conspiracy committed with the knowledge of Obama's White House. Have you Obamessiah cultists no shame?

Your statement, "The rumor of death panels is an idea that has been spread and perpetuated by health care enemies." is disengenious in itself. To say that folks who spread rumors of death panels are enemies of health care. Additionally, it is funny that people say that Sarah Palin spread a rumor. I like to beleive she used a little hyperboil. It is a literary tool allowed by both the left and the right. Her point as I understood it is that there is a zero sum gain. Either the market determins how health care is rationed or the government does. At some point if it is government run, the resources available will be insufficient to provide Congressional Quality healthcare to every American. America has the best health care in the world. Just not every American is entitled to the best health care in the world. Thanks to the Unions and Lawyers.
