Stoops on the hot seat in Norman?

POSTED AT 06:16 PM ON Jun. 14, 2009 | PRINT | Email | SHARE | COMMENTS (23)

I want to throw a thought out to our college football followers, as talk of preseason rankings and contenders begins to once again heat up.

Though I will understandably be called crazy, out of my mind and insane by many for this idea, it is very true from a unbiased standpoint. Here’s the question I pose to you:

Has Bob Stoops been put on the hot seat at Oklahoma?

All programs have certain standards that their coaches must meet, and they differ from school to school. At Oklahoma, it should be clear as crystal.

Win the Red River Rivalry with Texas. Win the Big 12 regular season and championship game. Win national championships.

Stoops has accomplished each of these program goals, though he hasn’t done each in the same season since 2000. He’s lost his last five of six Bowl Championship Series games, with the last win coming in 2003 in Pasadena. Since then, the Sooners have dropped four straight BCS bowl games, including losses to Boise State and West Virginia.

Stoops won his first and only title in his second season after his Sooners downed Bobby Bowden and Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Since, he’s struggled in the spotlight. The Sooners dropped two consecutive championship games in the 2003 and 2004 seasons by an average of 21.5 points to LSU and USC, respectively.

Aside from the BCS drought for the better part of the decade and essentially his entire career in Norman, Okla., Stoops has dropped three of the past four to coaching rival Mack Brown and his Texas Longhorns. The average margin of defeat in those losses?

20.3 points.

This past season, Oklahoma was given a shot at redemption after losing the Red River game when the BCS Selection Committee chose them instead of Texas to face Florida for the glass football. Although it was just a 10-point margin when the clock hit zero, there was no doubt Brandon Spikes and Co. were too fast, too strong and too prepared for the Sooners. Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner Sam Bradford was picked off twice, and the Sooner defense surrendered 480 yards to the Gators.

Say all you want about the plethora of speed, athleticism and competition in the Southeastern Conference and how Oklahoma was outmatched.

A contender from the Big 12, whose players competed in two BCS games in a row and scored 60-plus points five straight times to close out the season, should put up a better performance.

There is no question Stoops is a quality coach and motivator, but the “it” often referred to in sports has seemed absent in recent years. We saw it with Lloyd Carr at Michigan as his career came to an end. His Wolverines went 0-3 in the Rose Bowl the 2003, 2004 and 2006 seasons. Two of those losses were double-digit blowouts to USC.

The loss to mid-major Boise State at the conclusion of the 2006 season wasn’t enough to put Stoops on the hot seat. Sometimes, it just happens teams have an off-game at the worst time. But two more BCS losses, with one coming in the title game? Time to wonder.

If OU played in the big 12 south he would be gone already. They don't even make it to the conference championship let alone the national championship all those years.

Frank do yourself a favor by paying more attention to your own IU sorry FB Coaches present and past. Who cares in Indiana what goes on in Okla, well maybe a few with ties to Okla. What other present day college coach has been to 4 NC games in the last ten yrs, won their Conf 6 times. and has two Heisman winners. Hum I'm waiting. BOOMER SOONER!

Ummmm speaking as a OU fan to a more than likely big 10 fan. I disagree, Lloyd Carr ended his career by by having several disappointing seasons (least we forget app st?) and leaving the flaming wreckage for richRod. Stoops has had consistently 10 win teams go to BCS games and win conference championships(6). sounds a lot like Jim Tressel to me and you dont see a ton of buckeyes wanting him to go anytime soon. but enough with analogy's, just a little FYI for you. Down here in Norman we support stoops 100%, are we disappointed by the last few bowls? sure but we stand by our coaches down here, now why don't you go write a article about how awesome Indiana is in football...Please?

Best stick to your area. You are writing about football at Oklahoma University, and this article proves you know damn little about the subject. Of course you are correct, and we agree, you are crazy and insane.

Did you watch the same Orange Bowl that I did? Oklahoma went up and down the field on Florida. Two time inside the 5 and no points. Silly penalties hurting other scoring chances. Florida may have been more prepared but there is no way they were too fast and too strong. By they way, Bradford was picked off on a goofy deflection at the goal line and then again on a pass that bounced directly off the receiver's hands. I remember Tebow throwing two interceptions that were much more his fault than anyone else. Go back and watch that game again pal.

If Stoops is on the hot seat than so is every other coach in the country save Meyer, and possibly Carol.....

Frank, you are not an idiot and you ask a great question. It's a question that all OU alums including myself should ask. Here's what I think: From the outside it appears that OU is loaded with five star recruits at every position. In reality, OU does not get the players that Texas, Florida, or USC gets year in and year out. In some ways, winning the Big 12 and getting into the BCS year in and year out is a testament to how good a coach he really is. That being said, this is a big year for him. OU has their best defense in years and still has Bradford and company. They better beat Texas! I just paid $400 for two Red River Rivalry tickets :)

Bob Stoops is NOT on the hot seat. He has one of THE best records in college football today. While he certainly could have done better he has done exceptionally well. Unless something drastic happens he can stay at OU as long as HE wants. He will continue to keep winning Big 12 Championships, go to bowl games, and will win more national titles. Eat your heart Indiana ... and the rest of America!!

Hey Indiana, we wouldn't trade Stoops for anybody in the Big 10 Plus 1, or anywhere else for that matter. The Big 10's post season record ain't nothing to brag about especially in the Rose Bowl (Penn State was a prime example of grossly overmatched last year). As for OU's 2008 loss to Texas, Texas finished second in the Big 12 South yet they still beat a Big 10 school in the Fiesta Bowl. Let's not even get into Ohio State's bowl record against the SEC, it's 0 and 9. Talk is cheap especially when you don't know what your talking about.

And Indiana has won or played for HOW MANY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES?????????? Please keep your feeble words of wisdom all to yourselves! We have plenty of Journalistic Idiots in this state, as it is!!!!!!

I was going to leave a comment with my opinions, but after reading the comments of the eight people who have all ready left comments there is no need. They did a very good job expressing my opions.

Mr. Therber, Why are you trying to stir up something from nothing? Is it because your state has done so poorly in football and you are praying to get Stoops? Oklahoma has the best winning percentage and most wins since 1938. Stoops is carrying on this great tradition. Why would any coach leave "the best coaching job in college football?" You can talk about Notre Dame but you have to go back many years.

Everyone in Oklahoma is still completely enamored with Coach Stoops. Who would we possibly replace him with that is better?? Exactly. There is none better, at least in our opinion, and we like to think we know a little about football. LT.

This is a ridiculous column. Opps. Left out that Stoops has won 6 Big 12 titles in the past 8 years and no other SCHOOL has more than 2 in history of the league. Or what about Stoops and OU winning Big 12 championships the last 3 years in a row? 2 Heisman winners and 2 runners up in 10 years? And you have to get in the national championship game to win or lose it. Bob has done that more than anyone as well. In addition and more importantly to many of us, he has made tough decisions to maintain the integrity of the university and the football program, putting doing what is best and right above how it impacted the ability to win football games, like kicking the starting QB off the team on the first day of Fall camp because he knowingly cheated. There is no hot seat, just a comfortable throne for the best coach in college football.

My God, things must be really slow for writers, (if I can call you that) this summer. WTF are you thinking? There are a lot more reasons we didn't win the BIG games, players hurt, the biggest. Although totally disappointed by the end result, I wouldn't take any other coach in America over Stoopsie. Get a hobby dude.

WOW! I have too agree with the others, your completely off base with this. Sure Stoops has lost 5-6 BCS games, three of which were NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES! You fail to mention that he has won 6 Big 12 titles in 9 years and had a winning streak of 5 in a row against Texas! You sound like a 20 year old journalist just out of school. Your little analysis of the Florida game is wrong as well, anyone who watched that game realized OU out played Florida the first half and missed two golden opportunities to score inside the 5 yard line the first half, if OU scores those two TD's it's 21-7 at the half and game over.

This is one of the dumbest articles I've ever seen outside of FOX News.

Your example of lloyd Carr of Michigan is proof of how stupid your article is. Yeah Michigan wanted to fire Carr because he lost Rose Bowl games and couldn't beat Ohio State (recently). So what...Look at Michigan now. They suck!!!!!!! Stoops has out done any coach in the big 12, and has played for more National Tiles of any coach in the country. And Losing close games to Florida,Boise, and LSU (OU was a over throw pass in the final seconds of the game to wide open player from tying it up against LSU) shouldn't be something to hang your head or to be bashed about. You could do it with USC and West Virgina they flat out beat OU. But Stoops and Oklahoma are playing for championships every year and no other coach in the country has played for more of them then Stoops.

you're an idiot, and shouldn't even be allowed to write articles. let's say you are correct, and the university of oklahoma does fire bob stoops, i ask you three questions. 1. how many athletic directors will be in line waiting to offer him millions to come coach at there schools? 2. what kind of coach is oklahoma going to get? if i were a football coach i wouldn't want to follow stoops, would you? 3. you act like all his accomplishments mean nothing. who do you think ou could hire that would do a better job? maybe you should be writting articles on the "big 11" or why indiana football has sucked at football your entire life. BOOMER SOONER!
