University officials announced Tuesday they will not rename the Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center to include the name of former IU basketball player Bill Garrett.
Terry Clapacs, IU vice president and head of the All University Committee on Names, said in a news release that members of Garrett’s family objected to the compromise.
The proposed compromise paired the name of Garrett, who helped break the Big Ten’s basketball color barrier, with Wildermuth’s, who espoused segregationist views in several letters to University officials.
The IU board of trustees approved the name change Friday.
