IU head coach Bill Lynch cheers on his team during the Saturday loss to Wisconsin.

Emblazoned on a white banner, black letters proclaimed something a growing chunk of Bloomington felt.

“Fire Bill Lynch.”

The words rang loudly Saturday, and while the Hoosiers endured yet another loss in a forgettable season, the players on the sideline who could see the sign pocketed their feelings and let it all out as soon as they had the chance.

“Honestly, I wanted to go across the field and go into the stands and rip it away from them,” senior kicker Austin Starr said this week. “It just made me so upset. I went to the state police and asked them if there is any way that they could make those guys leave.

“I just think it’s incredibly disrespectful. They don’t know what goes on in our team. They may not even know Coach Lynch. But I just can’t believe that we have fans like that that are that harsh and that, I mean, I could call them any kind of name.”

Still, Lynch said “it’s all part of the territory” and tried to brush off the sign as nothing out of the ordinary.

“You’re so wrapped up watching the football game that I don’t notice those kinds of things,” Lynch said. “If you’re a football coach and you’re paying attention to that stuff, you’re not doing your job.”

As recently as a year ago, it seemed as if Lynch had the full backing of not just the student body, the athletics department or football alumni, but arguably most of Hoosier nation.

Following the death of coach Terry Hoeppner earlier that summer, Lynch took the reigns of a team that played with limitless emotion for 13 games, including the program’s first bowl game since 1993.

The Hoosiers finished 7-6. Back-to-back bowl games became a legitimate possibility. IU had a football program once again.

But this September, the season began to unravel. Beginning with a 42-20 loss to Ball State at home, IU fell in four more games, picked up an upset win against Northwestern and then subsequently lost the following two weeks.

Last Saturday, the Hoosiers hit rock bottom after Wisconsin blew up the scoreboard in the second half and won by 35 points.

“Coach Lynch is not doing anything wrong, and he’s taking a lot of the heat – people are saying he shouldn’t be here,” said junior linebacker Matt Mayberry. “But I mean, really, it’s the players. We’ve got to pick it up, and we’ve got to learn how to execute better.”

In articles and blogs and on message boards, many fans continue to voice their displeasure with the outcome of the season, blaming the woeful play on the coaching staff.

So with a visibly upset fan base and a team riddled with injuries – three-fourths of the secondary is out for the year – Lynch heads to Happy Valley to play a talented Penn State team.

All the while, his players stick with him. Starr exuded confidence in the coaching staff – specifically Lynch.

“There are no doubters on this team about our coaching staff,” Starr said. “You can’t doubt them because we come in every single day and their passion for the game – I mean, it speaks for itself and how they coach us.”

The players have their coach’s back even if they know a sizeable portion of their fans feel otherwise.

But to know the Hoosiers support Lynch is a good feeling, he said.

“We’ve had a tough year, and we’ve had a lot of things happen to us,” Lynch said. “But we’re sticking together, and we’re going to fight. We’re still fighting, and those of us on the inside that are there every day understand all of the things that have gone on. We’re all disappointed, but we’re still battling.”

Here's my prediction for 2009-10. No bowl invitation, again. Stadium attendance average lower than this season. And sports writers everywhere predicting another last place finish. FIRE LYNCH NOW.

Bill Lynch nned to to do ther right thing and step aside. This is way ovber his head. Hem ay be a nice guy but that does not mean he can handle the job ofd head coach in the big ten. He should be a position coach at an ivy league type school. IU needs to bite the bullet and spend monsy on a football program and in return IU will make money and be able to support the other programs.

Sorry, but as long as I see Thigpen trying to run up the middle, Lynch is doing something wrong. He is not an up the middle back, and it does not take a D1 coach to see that. They need more plays getting him out on the wings in space. That being said, I do support the Coach, and think he should have at least two more years to prove himself.

Josh, Hope you're right, I am from Indiana & a grad of IU, but have lived in Gainesville, FL for the past 23 years....I loved IU basketball, and I was there in the glory years of Knight....so I remember a whole different IU. An IU that won and won and won. You have to keep winning to stay in the spotlight, much like Hollywood, you can't rest on laurels. The Gators win a lot because they have people who WANT to coach here...right now, some of our Florida High Schools could beat IU...Yes, it makes me sad...maybe it will be resurrected, but the whole administration at IU needs change, not the players fault, it's good coaching that makes the difference. UF won twin titles in both Football & Basketball because of outstanding recruiting & coaching. The Gators won again last nite against S. Carolina & have only lost 21 points this season, the win and win and win--that's what you must do to stay on top.

This is for you "Karma." Are you kidding me? I wonder who you follow in college basketball. Do they have 5 national championships? Yes, it has been a long time, but it's so easy to win national championships, isn't it? People that understand basketball understand the following: 2008 recruiting class=top 25; 2009 recruiting class=#6. Yeah, you're right, seven freshman starting or playing a lot this season and incredible talent next season with a proven coach will end in disaster. Are y0u kidding me! Yes, Indiana will take it on the chin a few times this season, I concede this much, but that's it. Mark my words, we will be in the championship hunt 2010 and 2011. These freshman will learn so much this season and be so far ahead of other recruiting classes because of playing time, and then the overall talent will be implemented. I'm excited!

I like what Lynch is doing, especially with the recruiting for 2009. However, I think he is way to loyal or nice to his coaching staff and players. That's to say, offensive coordinator Canada has got to go. This guy is terrible! I've never seen an offense call games this horribly. Also, where is the young talent from this season's recruiting class? Seriously, we had several serious athletes and they are not on the field. Take for instance RB Willis. This guy is 6ft 210pounds and runs a 4.4 40 and he's not playing? In fact, he's playing behind Thigpen, a guy recruited to be a DB. He's playing behind Brugess, a walk-on? That's my point, Lynch basing his starters on their ages and not their talent. Lynch will probably lose his job because he is too friendly with his players and coaches, namely coach Canada.

IU students and athletes are alcoholics, hypocrites, in pathetic physical shape, and all pray to the invisible man in the sky. These mindless sheep deserve everything that happens to them.

Indiana's time in basketball has gone? We still have a lot more media attention than most schools because of our tradition. That's something that takes a ton of years to take away, and it's an asset that can always interest coaches and recruits. Indiana is one of the most marketable brands in college basketball.

Flatworld--you're so right on---IU definately has how to be crappy down to an art form. No management---who's at the helm? BooHooHoosiers is right on too. IU's time has come and gone, yeah it's sad as hell. Who'd have ever dreamed basketball in Indiana would die? It sucks for all those farm boys shooting hoops like in the movie Hoosiers-they have no one to look up to now...Shoulda kept Bobby at all costs, I knew that and I was just a kid then!!! Bunch a stupid dorks..they killed a beautiful thing.

Idiot named BooHooHoosiers thinks that Ohio State isn't a good football team. You idiot, they are among the top 10 in the country, and they have been ever since Tressell's second season. While it is true that no big name coach would want to coach at IU, you're completey wrong on your main point that OSU sucks.

BooHooHoosiers- Thanks for giving! A turkey leg to you!! And the other leg goes to "Football Girl"! Two Hoosier fans that understand - football is the bread stuffing and basketball is the turkey! And gravy is the prestige that comes from the turkey juices! Could somebody pass the gravy? I think I'm hungry now.

Listen up kids, Newsflash!!! The Big Ten is an irrelevant conference whan it comes to Football. Even,(and this is a MIGHTY big even) if IU were to ascend to the heights of say, Ohio State, we would still be a nobody in terms of national reputation. With the state of IU's Athletic Department, who are you going to lure to Bloomington??? Maybe Urban Meyer will leave the Gators, or Nick Saban, or maybe, just maybe....Pete Carroll!!!! PLEASE!! I'm sure the lure of Bloomington and the prestige of IU FOOTBALL will be too much for a real coach to turn down. Lynch may not be the right guy, but a new coach is a crap shoot at best. Anyone with any reputation has zero interest in coming to IU. The program is not going to get built to any level of success with the current administration. Don't waste your time worrying about IU Football. It sucked yesterday, it sucks today, and by God, it will suck tomorrow!!!

As you can see from my name, the poster is disrespectful. I am going to report it to the team's Senior Kickers Austin Starr and tell him to report it to the police, and then hopefully the police will report it to the feds and make that guy leave the stadium.

this is where austin "tough-guy" starr has it wrong. he may be backing the coach staff and think they are doing a good job but his idea of a good job is skewed because he sucks too. because he sucks so much his perception of the coaching staff is that they are talented and doing a good job. but that is like rotten garbage saying a dirty diaper isn't that bad. those that dont suck nearly as much know when we've hit rock bottom and believe it or not that is now. hire phil fulmer and give him the tubby smith treatment. no pressure, relative obscurity, and the chance to go down as one of the greatest in school history. imagine if he wins 9 games in the big 10 at IU. he'd be a legend. make it happen athletic department. you got the crean hire right, round out the other major revenue generating sport and complete the circle.

It took 25 years for the IU football team to build a tradition of crappiness, one could only theorize it should only take another 25 years to remain crappy. Keep Lynch. Don't waste more money! Not now! Not ever! Television revenues are the big bucks in collegiate athletics. The best shot for IU to maintain those revenues is through basketball. Don't spend money for a product the rest of the nation doesn't care to watch. Why? So we can one day play in the Snausages® Dog Treat Snack Bowl? Why do we want to call in a new doctor, another Dr. Vinny Boombatz coach to operate on a football program, when our once storied and healthy basketball program is barely hanging on in the ICU? Don't know if anyone has noticed lately, but nearly 1/3 of the allotted student season basketball tickets went unsold.(over 4000 seats!) All efforts by Fred Glass, and anyone that cares about restoring whatever small recognizable national perception that remains of IU's singular tradition in sport, should be focused primarily on basketball. Implode Assembly Hall! Use the steel scraps to build a monument to honor Bobby Knight! Let's build a new basketball stadium for the greatest fans in college basketball....A stadium that can provide a long overdue appropriate student seating section, a stadium that will stand like a gleaming tower to represent and reaffirm our pride in the past and our hope for the future, a stadium for the greatest BASKETBALL SCHOOL in the nation, IU!

We were embarrassed nationally last December in a game we lost while we were tying our shoes. There has been a terrible lack of coaching for years, I've seen 80 year old women tackle better than the hoosiers. Our current AD failed the entire athletic program and we have a president that should have sent him packing months ago. We need Knight as president, Ditka as AD, and Gary Fencik as head fb coach. There is no excuse for this garbage.

Boys boys boys...your only looking at the coach. What about the players? What about the offensive coordinators? It's not all Lynch. Since when did football become a sport that only the coach determined. Are you even looking at the loss to Ball State was because they are a great team this year? Look at the team as a whole. I agree, the boys do not sign the fight song with enthusiasm. That blame on the team and Lynch. They need to be fired up after a win and a loss because that's the only way they'll come out fighting the next week. And about Bob Knight..serously you think we can entice him with money? You do realize he wants nothing to do with the Hoosiers. We are turning focus on becoming a b-ball school once again..why do you think we got Crean? Have a little faith, everyone goes through a rough season. Once you hit rock bottom there's no where else to go but up.

Don't worry this is Bill's last year. He knows he is not doing a good job and in fact will most likely stay on as an assistant next year. There is a man who IU already has contacted who wants to come back to the Big 10. He played there and is very familiar to Indiana Fans and is currently doing very well with a Division 1 Program. They need him and excitement will return if he comes on.

Maybe if Lynch had the energy and passion that Hep had, people wouldn't be so cynical. But until I see passion and energy from the sideline once again from both players and coaches, IU football will never be what it once was to me. It was at least entertaining under Dinardo. 5 years of being a season ticket holder and I will continue to do so, but this is the first year in those five years that I didn't want to stay to see the rest of the game. Even when the teams sings the fight song after a win, which were few this year, they don't have nearly the same amount of passion or energy doing so. That's coaching, it's set in team meetings, it's the way things will be during the Lynch era... and until he is gone, I, among others, will scream for his firing, because he doesn't deserve IU football and IU football does not deserve him. FIRE BILL LYNCH!

IU football has always been a Div II school playing in Div I. We should leave the football program alone and invest the $ to entice Bob Knight out of retirement and make Indiana what it really was... A B-ball school. Until then, I will withhold my Alum donations as I have since the day Bob was fired.

Posted by Reality at 9:44 AM on Nov 14, 2008 | Report this comment

I agree coach Lynch is a nice guy too...but his play calling is vanilla and our athletes are probably Div. II caliber....i hate to say it because I love IU, but sometimes the truth hurts. We need to start fresh with a coach that can recruit Div. 1 athletes, and then have some guts on play calling...hurry up offense every play, trick plays and lets see some more blitzing on defense. It sure would make the game more exciting, may actually give us a chance, but most of all it won't be like watching a yugo getting blasted head on by a semi like we see right now. If you don't believe this, pay attention this weekend... Penn State will win by at least 40 points. I want to call FEMA for some disaster relief funds...or maybe a bailout from Bush or Obama.

Posted by I at 7:41 AM on Nov 14, 2008 | Report this comment

Why does IU hire assistant coaches, they dont pan out by any means... Davis after Knight Freitag after Yeagley Lynch after Hep I dont see Lynch lasting past next season, and thats only because we are getting a new AD. I dont see our football team lasting past the 1st quarter, and thats only because of who is at the helm. Thats fine and dandy that Lynch is a nice guy personally, but that doesn't win football games and thats not what he is being paid to do. The only way to make IU football not IU football anymore and by filling up the Rock is by getting a coach who has coached in a real program (not Ball State/Miami of O/etc. etc.) and pay him competitively among other coaches.
