Former North Carolina senator and Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards discusses his candidacy and the implications of the 2008 presidential election Tuesday evening at IU Auditorium.

Former Sen. John Edwards said Sen. John McCain had a weight around his neck in the final days of the presidential campaign.

That weight, he said, was President Bush.

Edwards spoke Tuesday at the IU Auditorium as a part of the Indiana Memorial Union Board’s speaker series. The talk was his first public appearance since August, when he admitted to having an extramarital affair with a campaign staff member when his wife was battling cancer. During that three month period, Edwards remained out of the public eye as Barack Obama campaigned for the presidency.

But Tuesday, with the elections a week past, Edwards took the stage to talk about what an Obama administration would mean for America and the world.

“The most important thing for President-elect Obama to provide is vision,” Edwards said.

He called on a “new era” of American leadership in areas such as foreign policy, climate change, the economy, the Iraq War and health care.

“That’s what the American people wanted to see, and at the top of the ticket they saw it in Barack Obama,” he said.

Edwards also said the election outcomes showed that the American people are ready for something new in politics.

“The result of last Tuesday was not an accident,” he said. He later added, “Americans want change, and they wanted something different.”

The former North Carolina senator showed few signs of rust after months on the sideline of the election. He was his usual self: confident, relaxed, funny.

At one point when talking about the elections, he said McCain “came back from the dead to win the Republican nomination.”

Some in the crowd chuckled at the remark about McCain, who would have been the oldest president elected.

“That was not a joke,” said a smiling Edwards, to which the crowd erupted in laughter.

Edwards began the night talking about the election process and said Obama’s long primary battle with Sen. Hillary Clinton helped strengthen him as a candidate.

Those familiar with Edwards probably recognized familiar pillars from his past stumps on the campaign trail.

He said the central cause of his life was eliminating poverty and said he would work for the rest of his life to achieve it.

He also hit on some of his typical campaign themes, such as universal health care and strengthening the economy.

One of Edwards’ strongest messages was the need for America to be a world leader again. He sharply criticized the Bush foreign policy of the last eight years.

“America cannot bully its way to making the world a safer place,” he said.

Edwards said Obama will make the United States respected once again on foreign shores.

He also said economic and energy problems are international as well as domestic issues.

“Without global cooperation,” he said, “these problems cannot be solved, and America needs to lead the way.”

He spoke for about 30 minutes and then fielded 13 questions for another half hour.

Questions were selected from those written down before the speech, including some about Clinton and Sen. Joe Liebermen, a Democrat-turned-independent who is being heavily criticized by his former party for campaigning with McCain before the election.

Edwards dodged any controversial remarks during questions and made no reference to his affair or his wife.

He applauded grassroots organizational work done in cities like Bloomington during the elections. He said the youth brought a freshness and energy to the campaign this year.

“We need you,” Edwards said. “America needs you, and I hope you stay involved.”

here are about 37 million Americans who are now living in poverty in the U.S. During these difficult economic times, more and more Americans are slipping into poverty every day and rarely do they send out announcements, but rather they suffer in silence. John Edwards has often said that he wants to be a spokesman for those with the weakest voices. He has been the only national political voice to speak about poverty since LBJ. Elizabeth Edwards has stated that she and John are willing to make fighting poverty their life’s work. I encourage President-Elect Barack Obama to back them in the fight against poverty by creating a Poverty Czar cabinet position for Senator John Edwards. There is no better person, than John Edwards, to be the first head up a department, which has its goal the elimination of poverty in the U.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJlKE_BLAUM http://www.johnedwards.com/news/speeches/20070621-reduce-debt

Is this guy the biggest disgrace ever. Do as I say, not as I do. What a creep. Cheats on his dying wife and screws over his family. Give me a break. If he can't be faithful to his wife and kids, how can he give a damn about us. How many lives will he ruin. Shame on you IU for promoting such scum.

In other words, neither of you have anything more than bitter, jealous, partisan sniping. No proof, just make the accusation. You're both Republicans, huh?

Selective Money, Sen McCain was not paid to speak at the University, darling. $35,000.00 in your selective state tax money. LAHA

Hey Let's All Have Affairs, do any of you whining conservatives realize that your beloved McCain also had an affair? Well, I guess his can be construed as worse because he left his wife for his cheap lay and then proceeded to convert his cheap lay into an ATM to fund his political career. Can you seriously criticize Edwards after voting for McCain?

To TheObvious and Get Over it: The John Edwards love child should had been late-term aborted, President elect Obama would approve. Ummmm, they did catch the adultress and Mr. Edwards in a hotel and it was almost in "the act." The adultress refuses to take the DNA test, by the way, darlings. She needs the letter "A" carved on her bod-dess. Marriage is the death-bed of love. Mrs. Edwards is dying of cancer while this was going on, say a prayer for her, please. Your friend, Let's All Have Affairs

The shocking thing would be that you honestly think his girlfriend would admit it! If she did it would be bye bye gravy train. Now, thats the way it works.

Anyone who defends edwards' affair is not better than he is. Also, just b/c some people on here say its not an issue doesn't suddenly make it irrelevant. His wife had cancer and when she needed him the most he bailed on her and cheated. If you can't stay faithful to someone you "love" why would we trust this man to make any decisions with this country. John McCain and bll did the same thing and I think they should be admonished as well.

To valley & LAHA: Could you please provide the proof that John Edwards fathered a child from his affair? What? You have none, because even the woman herself has denied that? You mean you're just casting ugly accusations you can't prove for nothing more than petty partisan reasons? Shocking, I tell you...

I prefer practice what you preach....so Obama send your kids to public school like Carter did (not the private school) and Edwards give your money away, sell the mansions, forget the $500 haircuts...if you all want change and say we should all support and do these things...then please have the courage to do them too. Until you actually actually demonstrate and live what you claim to support and do....you are no better than Bush..because like it or not...Bush actually does what he says and lives like it...tax cuts for rich.

Wow, the sleazy ambulance chaser was SOOOO insightful. BTW, this isn't jsut about his affair, read up on all he has accomplished as a politician. Oh wait, that would be zero. I guess he did not mention his program to send kids from Eastern NC to college if they graduate, no, he pulled the plug on that one in a hurry. As long as he sounds good, that is all that matters. Let's just say no one in his home state will be paying to hear him anytime soon.

Please get over the Edwards affair stuff. Do you know how many married couples are not faithful? Puleeze...this stuff has gone on since the beginning of time. Talk about Edwards' political philosophy, his party affiliation, his stand on specific issues ... but forget about his infidelity. It is so not an issue.

I'm glad to see John Edwards engaging the youth voters again. And I hope someday he gets on a blue ribbon panel to tackle the issue of poverty. Thanks for the report.

Has the stench left the Union since this guy departed? This country should not give this egomaniac a free pass. He wants to live in la la land pretending that his public statements will put an end to his extramarital affairs discussion. Well, if your public statements didn't contain more lies and excaberate the whole thing, maybe we'd give it a rest. Please Sen. Edwards, do us all a favor and find a rock to hide under for a long, long time. You have no credibility left to believe a single word out fo your mouth.

this is a heartless man. he cares not about poverty, but his own legacy. if he will live a lie amongst his sick wife and children, he will certainly lie to the american people. did the university pay for this speech? if so, they should be VERY ashamed.

Of course he was relaxed. He really doesnt give a sh.t. He has his young lady and his new kid. His wife still covers for him. He still lives in luxury. He recieved 35,000. from IU. Just like Hillary and Bill. The difference is that Hilary could have cared less what her Husband did, she was just pissed that he nearly ruined her political future. Do you people really think Edwards has stopped his affair, when he goes and sees his baby and momma. Wow... Life is good when your John Edwards!

I wonder if it would be aok with the paying public when god forbid one member of the partnership gets very sick and the other member of the partnership is courting a sweet young southern partner along with her having his love child while florida mom was sick. Marriage is the death-bed of love. Your pal, Let's All Have Affairs
