Former Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards will break almost three months of public silence when he speaks at 7 p.m. today at the IU Auditorium.

Edwards admitted in August to having an extramarital affair with a campaign staff member while his wife battled cancer in 2006 and canceled all speaking events until after the election.

Edwards’ speech, titled “The Land of Opportunity,” comes one week after Barack Obama won the presidential election. Union Board lectures director Andrew Dahlen said the former North Carolina senator will give his reaction to the election and brings a unique perspective to the race.

“I think it’s a tremendous opportunity for students and the community, especially in such a tumultuous time,” he said.

Dahlen said he expects Edwards to talk about the future of the country and hit upon key points in his platform as a senator.

Edwards will speak for 45 minutes, which includes a 15-minute question-and-answer session, Dahlen said. Audience members will have a chance to write down questions, some of which will be asked, Dahlen said.

Dahlen said the Union Board decided to not allow open-ended questions from the audience, but rather use written questions. He said it had little to do with protecting unwanted questions about Edwards’ affair.

“It was mainly just insuring a different topic of questions can be brought up so not everyone’s asking about his stance on education or something like that,” Dahlen said.

But the Union Boards’ decision to bring Edwards to speak – which cost $35,000 – has garnered criticism on whether it is appropriate to pay someone to speak who recently admitted his extramarital affair. The Union Board knocked off $15,000 from the proposal after Edwards admitted to his affair in August.

Justin Hill, former chairman of Students for John McCain, said he prefers a speaker who is more involved in the presidential campaigns.

“He campaigned as one person, and he turned out to be someone else,” Hill said. “I personally would prefer to hear from someone like a campaign manager who is really in the nitty-gritty and in the grind of the process.”

Still, Dahlen said he believes people will see past Edwards’ mistake and will recognize the unique perspective he can bring to the race.

“The perspective is really unrivaled,” Dahlen said, “as far as individuals that could comment on the presidential election, and I think students recognize that.”

Do any of you whining conservatives realize that your beloved McCain also had an affair? Well, I guess his can be construed as worse because he left his wife for his cheap lay and then proceeded to convert his cheap lay into an ATM to fund his political career. Can you seriously criticize Edwards after voting for McCain?

It is a very poor act in judgement when Indiana University decided that John Edwards was worth paying to talk to the students....What a terrible role model and an example that I guess LIARS are worth listening to! I find it very sad and I hope that the students are smart enough not to waste their time listening to him...

Well--very bad choice. But, consider donating your entire fee to the UNC Center of Poverty. Anyone living in a 23,000 square foot home with a Figure Eight beach house can afford to do so.

Dear Florida mom, Why dont u do some research on McCain before opening your mouth, Shortly after he came back from being a POW he left his wife. Ya think he had other problems going on in his life? Not that you could even imagine what he went thru. I dont agree with cheating on your spouse. But please tell me what Edwards was going thru, what made him loose all sense of his diginity and screw his ailing wife. Well, thats your history lesson!

Throughout life, everyone has made mistakes. It is human nature and the bible teaches us to forgive. John Edwards accomplishments and talents should not be diminished, nor would Elizabeth want them to be. What makes his sins any greater than George Bush's acts of murder in Iraq? Or Dick Cheney's feathering the pockets of his buddies in corporate America? Or even JFK's liasons while married to Jackie. You Americans are not all holier than thou? John Edwards is admirable in many ways...take off your blinders!

Ummm, Valley, where else can you go as an adulterer and corrupt lawyer, er um Senator -- as in McCain-- and run for president of the most powerful nation on earth, lose and then retain your senate seat? Senator McCain is an admitted adulterer, and the situation wasn't that much different in his case, as his wife, Carol, had debilitating injuries from her auto accident, and yet he didn't feel obligated to stay true to his marriage vows. Remember your history before you speak. We aren't a nation that is governed by moral codes, as is evidenced by what we have seen more than once throughout this country's political history. Give Senator Edwards a chance to speak, he has always been a voice for the people, it may well be worth your time, and your patience.

bill clinton cheated on his wife. I think he still gets paid some money to speak, and people like to listen to what he has to say. Just because they had an affair, that doesn't mean they don't know what they are talking about, or they arn't good politicians.

As a Black American, it is because of your courage and patriotism that that there now is a President Barack Obama. I thank you for, enduring those all day and all night bus tours throughout cold and snowy Iowa during the primary. (This thanks is especially for you Elizabeth.) I thank you John for being our modern day Paul Revere. I remember the Coopers Union speech where you tried, oh so gently, to prepare us for what has happened, the collapse of our nation's financial institutions. In July of 2007 Senator John Edwards, proposed the following solutions: "First, I will create a Family Savings and Credit Commission to make sure that financial services treat families safely. ...It will deal with all financial services ...It will ban the most abusive terms and make sure consumers understand the others. ...pass strong national laws protecting us against the worst abuses in credit markets predatory mortgages, abusive credit card terms, and payday loans with interest rates of 300 percent or higher. Finally, I will help create alternatives to abusive lenders. I will help working families build up a cushion by matching their savings and bringing bank accounts to the 56 million without them. And I will support non-profit groups offering affordable, short-term loans. We need a new era of responsible lenders who see families as long-term investments, not quick bucks. All across the economy, we need to do the same thing take on the special interests and put Washington back on the side of regular families. " John and Elizabeth Edwards you are two of the greatest American patriots who have ever lived, and you are much loved. Sometimes I wonder John and Elizabeth if you are Angels in disguise. God bless you and your family, and remember "Black America Has Your back". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJlKE_BLAUM http://www.johnedwards.com/news/speeches/20070621-reduce-debt
