My position misrepresented

The op-ed by Yahya Chaudhry, “Praise for anti-zionism,” is so filled with factual errors, ad hominems and outright bigotry that I am shocked it was published by a fine student newspaper without elementary fact-checking.

Chaudhry accuses a United States senator, who happens to be Jewish, of dual loyalty – a canard that dates back to the discredited protocols of the Elders of Zion. He accuses me of being “crazed” because I support a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. He misquotes several Israeli leaders and falsely characterizes their position.

He places several purported statements in quotation marks without revealing their source, beyond saying that they are “Israeli leaders.” He describes Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza as a “violent conquest” without mentioning that the 1967 War, which led to Israel’s occupation, was started by the Arab states, and that Israel has ended its occupation of the Gaza.

He bases his article on a fabricated quotation that a discredited reporter attributed to Jesse Jackson. Jackson has not only categorically denied saying that, “Barack Obama would rid the United States of ‘Zionist’ control if elected,” he has in fact praised Zionism as a “liberation movement” and has advocated the same two-state solution as Senator Lieberman and I do.

Chaudhry’s worst bigotry is reserved for the Jewish religion, which he mocks with the following characterization: “if Jews really are God’s chosen people, then the Jewish state of Israel does not need American support. Israel has a monopoly on God. Who would go against Him?” This is anti-Semitism, pure and simple.

Alan M. Dershowitz
Professor of Law
Cambridge, Mass.

I am a bit confused by Alan's claim that "This is anti-Semitism, pure and simple." Anti-Semitism is prejudice or hatred against Jews. In re-reading his article it is clear to me that he does not even make a single claim against Jews. If you read this article carefully, the only claim he makes is that the US should not support a religious-based government, especially one that possibly is bias. This claim questions the role of religion in government, not religion in general. And, actually, what a profound question he provokes: what role should religion play in government? While they are closely related, there is an inherent difference in Judaism and Zionism. It is clear to me that Yahya is against this sort of religious-based government that Zionism is all about, not Judaism. If only you were not so quick to pull the "anti-semite" card you might have thought about this.

Have NOT yet seen a real apology to the Jewish students, faculty, and alumni? Will Chaudrhy remain on staff at the IDS? What will Chaudrhy's next assignment be? Does anyone know what websites this student is affiliated with? It's looking more and more like accountability at the IDS died with Mr. Adams. Probably NOT going to see many more awards for exceptional journalism like in years past.

This is not about the first amendment it is about a publication that DISCRIMINATES regularly on what to publish and what not to publish. They also discriminate on whose information they feel is worthy and credible and make CHOICES daily on what will run in their paper. The notion that the IDS is obligated in any way to help Chaudry (who was not writing a work of fiction) exercise his first amendments rights is beyond ignorant. Chaudry has the right to post his views on all kinds of hate sites all over this country but the real problem here is that this University and this Student Paper had NO OBLIGATION to help him out yet they CHOSE otherwise. The academic director of the IDS was either asleep at the wheel or gave his stamp of approval, either way he should be removed. It will send clear messages to these students that when you choose what to publish and what not to publish there are consequences that have serious impacts on reputation, culture and the lives of your readership. If there were a publisher for this paper I believe heads would have rolled over this and a proper apology would have been published. We shall all have to wait on the Trustees…

Please write to the Trustees though their secretary Robin Roy Gress at; rgress@indiana.edu and ask for new leadership at our beloved IDS. This article and the follow-up article, "Column sparked debate" should never have been published. Any newspaper in my community or surrounding communities would have found themselves shut down by their advertisers. Since the main advertiser of the IDS is the University it is incumbent on them to make it known that there will be consequences for this horrible judgment call and failure in leadership at the IDS.

Attention Trustees, nothing short of terminating the senior advisor at the Indiana Daily Student will suffice! Not only did they print an irresponsible piece of journalism but followed it up with a companion opinion piece that praised them for publishing it. Not a single professor/advisor for the IDS had the good sense to see to it that a PROPER apology and retraction was published. There must be consequences for this horrible judgment, it reflects badly on this university and the trustees who govern it.

It is clear that the IDS is suffering from horrible leadership. I hope that administration takes notice and most of all takes action before we turn out a generation of journalists who cannot make it in the outside world.

IU is very hostile toward Jews? What evidence supports that claim? Or doesn't one need evidence? Is the evidence one sloppily written, unconvincing, crappy editorial in the student newspaper? Pathetic. Additionally, as an "East Coaster," no one's ever assumed that I'm Jewish just because I come from the East Coast. What evidence is there to back up that this happens? It's easy to be a bigot on the Internet. No one has the right not to hear an opinion they don't like, or the right not to be offended.

Dershowitz is a demagogue who is willing to suspend free speech if it entails criticizing Israel, a state that violates international law AND core basic human rights. No wonder they need to result to shame tactics to squelch debate. Read this Harvard paper and understand why Dershowitz resigns himself to the tactics that he does: http://ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011

Also to Anti-Zionist post number 13 And for you to not want a Zionist state, well just google what Israel has done to better this world. Then google what the surrounding nations have done to better this world. Let me do it for you: Jewish people have won 184 nobel peace prizes with only a population of 12 million (.2% of the world) The arabs/islamists who would take over Israel if there was no Zionest state make up 1.4 billion people (20% of the world's population) and they have won 9 nobel piece prizes. If they stayed at the Jewish rate with all their nobel prizes, the Arabs should have accumulated 25,000, but they don't, they are more concerned with making bombs and committing acts of terrorism, whereas Israel tries to better the world. Israel modeled their government after the USA and are the only Liberal democracy in the middle east. If you don't like Israel, then you don't like the USA, so get the hell out of this country.

To Anit-Zionist -- Post number 13 First off -- Alan Dershowitz is said to be the foremost expert on the Consitution. So I am pretty sure this mega-lawyer, harvard professor, is a little more intelligent than you, especially in since your arguments make no sense. How is Israel and apartheid state when we don't have a secular government, let arabs(including palestinians) live in Israel, work in Israel, and establish businesses in Israel. How has Israel oppressed Palestinians? Because we took the land back that was taken from us earlier? We supply food and electricity in Gaza for no charge, and that is for all the Palestinians, and what do they do?, launch missiles at us. And for you to say, just because one article was written, how we are outraged. You don't know what you are talking about. I was a student at IU in the AEPI fraternity and anti-semetism has been going on in that liberal, hick-town for a long time. I have had hate filled rants spewed my way, swastikas drawn on our fraternity, many anti-semetic IDS articles, and now this one. So for you to say that this is the first time it has happened, I invite you to walk in my shoes for a day and see all the hate that is spewed my way. It gets so bad at IU, that sometimes I am afraid to tell people I am Jewish. And Dershowitz did not defend OJ ever in court. He was a consitutional expert for his defense. All he did was define the Constitution for the courts. I think you have Dershowitz confused with Jonny Cochran.

It is truly remarkable that an article like this was even considered to be published and the author of the column was not barred from ever being able to submit writing for the IDS. Opinion aside, there is nothing factual about the article. It is pure hatred. It is pure anti-semitism at a time where there are far more important issues to discuss and write about. This proves how discredited the student body who run the IDS are by even allowing an individual to write for such a newspaper. I just spoke with the Editor-in Chief and she did not even read over this article prior to it being published nor could give any real reason as to why the Opinion Editors thought this to be a good article to publish. How can crazed anit-semitism be allowed in a setting like this? The ironic part is that the Jewish community at IU is badgered more than any other group of individuals yet the Jews have yet to respond in any negative way whatsoever. If that had been a racist article directed at Senator Obama, I could only imagine the upheaval that would have caused. I hope for the sake of this university and the credibility of this newspaper, a retraction statement is made and printed immediately in response to this rude, outlandish, and purely anti-semetic article.

Just understand that Israel is our friend in the middle east because they are a democracy. They believe in they same as America. Many Arabs live quite well there. Israel is our stablizer in a very hostile region. They have wiped out many nuclear wepons plants being bult by countries that have declared war against the US.

1) "Mr. Dershowitz, thank you for clearing up this anti-Semitic mess!" Wow! Now it's anti-semetic to criticize Israel's horrendous treatment of Palestinians, their apartheid state, and the billions of dollars the U.S. has given to Israel. What is this world coming to...You people are pathetic liars, you misuse the word "anti-semitism", and you are even giving positive connotations to the term. 2) "Thank you for clearing this up Prof. D. I enjoy reading a lot of your articles, except the one in which you support Barack Obama. In regards to this article, thanks for clearing up more misrepresentation by the media. For some reason IU is verrrrrry hostile towards jews." Are you really that delusional? Come on, hostile to jews? One article appears in the IDS critical of Israel that is critical of Jews and now IU is a hostile and racist place. What you really mean to say is that IU does not cater enough to Jewish supremacists like yourself, and therefore it is anti-jewish. 3) Dershowitz is a hate monger guilty of plagiarism, made a career out of smear campaigns, and has defended people like O.J. Simpson and the most extremest elements in Israel. In fact, he has soooo much time free time, he has nothing better to do than run a smear campaign against an IU student. Get a life Dershowitz.

Thank you for clearing this up Prof. D. I enjoy reading a lot of your articles, except the one in which you support Barack Obama. In regards to this article, thanks for clearing up more misrepresentation by the media. For some reason IU is verrrrrry hostile towards jews. This is most likely because all the out of state east coasters who are generally more wealthy tend to be stereotyped as being jewish. Shocking such stupidity occurs at an educational institution like IU.

What a feeble attempt at discrediting a quality article. As someone thoughtful recommended, check out the debates at Harvard between Alan Dershowitz and Noam Chomsky. It should be pretty clear who is a genuine intellectual (Chomsky) and who has spent his life merely arguing for false idols (Dershowitz).

I am astonished that Prof. Dershowitz has nothing better to do than attack an IDS columnist for stating an unpopular opinion. It is obvious that Prof. Dershowitz believes in a suspension of the First Amendment when speaking about Israel. I suggest he do something positive in regard to to the Israeli-Palestinian situation rather than attack a 19-year-old college newspaper columnist.

Wake up people. The legacy of Israeli influence in America is long. Many, now and in the past, have tried to stifle legitimate criticism of Israel accusing writers of being "anti-semitic." Check out the paper that started it all by two distinguished Harvard and University of Chicago Professors: The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy http://ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011 Also check out the debates at Harvard between Alan Dershowitz & Noam Chomsky.
