Long Thompson for governor

The race for the governor’s mansion has been, perhaps, the most difficult to decide. Unlike so many races in Indiana, voters have been presented with two competent candidates, both capable of executing the executive’s tasks. Moreover, it’s not clear either candidate would do much more than that.

Mitch Daniels has not done a despicable job as governor. Most impressively, he has abolished the good-ol’ boy style of management that marked eight years of the Frank O’Bannon and Joseph Kernan administrations. In office, Daniels has professionally transformed more than $600 million of deficit into a substantial surplus.

But neither Jill Long Thompson nor Daniels is running on a platform of serious change or upheaval. Rather, each takes a relatively moderate approach likely to appeal to traditional voters. In this hard time and in stagnant Indiana, we would like to hear braver, more ambitious rhetoric from both.

While the candidates themselves stand out for their scholastic excellence and professional preparedness – Daniels graduated from Princeton and Georgetown and was an Eli Lilly executive while Long Thompson holds a Ph.D. from IU and served as undersecretary of agriculture in the Clinton administration – their lieutenant governor choices leave much to be desired.

Becky Skillman, Daniel’s running mate, is Indiana’s own version of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Skillman has no formal college education and was a small-town bureaucrat and state senator before Daniels noticed her, likely for her local appeal to conservative southern Indiana.

Dennie Ray Oxley II, Long Thompson’s running mate, is a small-town teacher and state legislator.  He, too, seems to have been chosen for his appeal to the conservative southern portion of the state, even when that puts him at odds with Long Thompson over issues such as abortion and civil unions for same-sex couples.

We feel uncomfortable at the prospect of either running mate becoming governor.
The economy is lackluster, no place more so than in Indiana, where workers make 11.6 percent less than the national average. Compounding this problem, Indiana suffers from severe brain drain. Each year, one-third of its university graduates leave the state for good.

Daniels has succeeded in attracting a number of jobs to Indiana.

But Long Thompson’s proposal to target job growth through green technologies and provide additional incentives to employers who create jobs in the state’s most economically distressed communities is a far more holistic and sustainable approach.

By ranking counties into three developmental tiers, Long Thompson’s plan will restructure Indiana government to ensure all Hoosiers are given a chance to participate in the 21st Century Scholars Program.

Creating a surplus and attracting new employment opportunities have unquestionably made Indiana, as a whole, a better place. But to pursue this growth, the Daniels administration has grossly overlooked the betterment of individual Hoosiers.

To give everyone access to a better future, Long Thompson proposes to bring broadband to every community, including under-served urban areas, within the next few years.

Most egregiously, Daniels privatized state welfare. Now, those most likely to be unable to access phones or Internet – the elderly, the indigent, the homeless, etc. – must call or go online to claim the support they need to make ends meet. Long Thompson has spoken out against this privatization for what it is – corporate exploitation of the most vulnerable.

Daniels hasn’t governed atrociously, and Long Thompson offers much of the same, fundamentally sound approach to governing.

However, her greater respect for all Hoosiers, not just corporations, makes her the best choice.

"Indiana suffers from severe brain drain. Each year, one-third of its university graduates leave the state for good." Uh, when can we count on your brain 'draining' from Indiana, and how much $$$$ will it cost us, or how much $$$$ will we make?

Long Thompson for governor WE SAY ’Tis the season to privatize Mitch Daniels. IDS Staff Editorial | IDS | Date: 10/28/2008 "The race for the governor’s mansion has been, perhaps, the most difficult to decide.....Daniels hasn’t governed atrociously, and Long Thompson offers much of the same, fundamentally sound approach to governing. However, her greater respect for all Hoosiers, not just corporations, makes her the best choice'.....Dear IDS Staff....Jill Long has never governed. All she has ever done was suck up to Bill Clinton and get clobbered by Mark Souder, who is, by the way, still a congressman after 14 years. Where do idiots like you come from???? This is a "no-brainer", Mitch has resurrected Indiana from 12 very pathetic years of Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon. The only thing either of them had going for them was Reagonomics budget surpluses. Jill Long may know how to handle a hoe on the farm, but assuredly she has no ideas on how to empower Hoosiers. Again, where do idiots like you come from? California??? Please go back!!!!! Leave us Hoosiers alone!!!!

I would love to go on about how rediculous and biased this article is but it has already been said in the previous statements. The IDS has always been librally biased, but this definitely takes the cake. You want to support a candidate that is going to abolish the previous administration's working tasks and employ a new, flawed plan that segregates the very state you live in? As a way of improving the state's economy, this is hardly a mediocre decision. I would put it up there with others that "look good on paper" but the execution falls horribly short.

This article is outstandingly inaccurate and does not reflect Governor Daniels accurately in any way. I wish I had the time to write a comprehensive response to this liberal rhetoric. But, thankfully, I'm sure you will be receiving a number of response letters detailing the many ills of this column. Please visit mymanmitch.com for the REAL story. A final jab: The IDS is a poor excuse for a news source. This liberal soap box is embarassing to all IU students as well as the journalism department. You (IDS staffers) MUST to familiarize yourselves with your leftist bias, if not, I fear that the IDS staff will never receive the praise it could undoubtedly garner if its editors were more aware of what they are printing.

I will more than likely not read the IDS for a while. I can put up with your Obama crap but this is way out of touch. Go do your homework IDS and stop voting a straight ticket on every piece you write.I wish I could take back my tuition money that goes to pay for this paper

I agree with HoosierDaddy. Mitch Daniels is the best governor this state had had in recent memory. He has balanced our budget without raising raxes and has created new jobs (one of which my cousin has landed). This is indeed naive liberal propaganda from a leftist-leaning opinion staff. Think economy, not popularity.

This article seems to be another piece of IDS liberal propaganda. Now I lean more to the left, but this newspaper is crazy with its leftist approach to everything.

I tend to lean more democrat, but this election will be a vote for Daniels hands down - most other democrats are doing this as well. The editorial board of the IDS need not go much further than short walk across woodlawn and sit in some SPEA classes to see that JLT plan of breaking out our counties into tiers is a horrible idea. This is a globalized economy, the push to have manufacturing in smaller towns and more rural areas is over. These companies want to be near rails, intermodal facilites, roads, and dense population. JLT plan is ludacris. Using her judgement Orange County to our south thta only has casinos and minor/light industry would be a targeted county on her list. The citizens will end up having to pay more in taxes in that county because the infrastructure isn't available in some of these rural counties to support green jobs or manufacturing. It takes a lot of power - of which a non existent high power grid is available in some of these areas. New water mains will have to be dug to a field that was just agriculture use before. Really think about the ramifications of randomly placing large jobs in some of our most rural areas - it will not bring good fortune. Daniels has done a pretty good job - enough to at least bring us to the 20th century.

Your attack on our "so-called" lackluster economy in Indiana is unconvincing and grossly inaccurate. Yes, our wages in Indiana are significantly lower than the national average. Yes, we are stuggling with the loss of manufacturing jobs in some key sectors. That has been a problem in Indiana for many years. The Daniels administration has been the first to proactively turn the tide. Sometimes your weaknesses can be used to create strengths. Hoosiers possess a cost of living which is 93.8% of the national average, with housing at 86.9%. This is highly appealing to companies seeking to relocate their work force. Furthermore, our recently issued AAA Bond rating has helped us attract the attention of companies looking to settle in a region where the government manages their resources responsibly. The Daniels administration has forged amazing relationships with key universities to foster incubators for job growth. The Daniels/Skillman team has an unprecedented record of job development in tough economic times across all sectors. It is imperative to the ongoing success of this state that you are more responsible to your student voters in reflecting this talented administration accurately. Their future job opportunities depend on it.

I am afraid the writers of this article are incredibly naive and inexperienced. As a businessman (the kind who creates jobs for IU graduates) and independent voter, I know beyond a doubt that Mitch is the best thing this state has had in a long time. Jill Long's campaign is based on her having to create negative twisted facts. She is CLUELESS about the needs of business, which drives the job creation. Yeh, it's nice to say catch phrases like "green" and "broadband to everyone", but those things take money, which can only be achieved through the kinds of surpluses Mitch has created. Jill would spend us back into a hole. Every intelligent person and organization in state has endorsed Mitch - do the editors just feel they need to be rebels without a clue?

This is by far the most ridiculous piece I have seen you guys run yet. Mitch Daniels is one of the nation's BEST executives at any level, corporate or government. We have been truly BLESSED to have him at the helm of our once backward state. Beginning with the license branch, moving on to the toll road, and job creation and family services and property taxes and about a dozen other things, Mitch has improved efficency, lowered costs and rid Hoosiers of the "hassle" factor - while at the same time, CARING about the lives of the Hoosiers he serves. We have hundreds of new case workers. Our children are being protected better than ever. State welfare will ultimately be run more efficiently than ever. Progress always takes a little pain. Period. I bought a new car during the transition to the state's new computer system at the BMV. It took me 5 hours to get my plates. It was terrible during the conversion. Now it takes about 15 minutes. The same will happen with the welfare system. With regard to Becky Skillman, Mrs. Skillman is one of Indiana's greatest business success stories - with or without a formal education, as you call it. Don't get too self-righteous about formal education. It doesn't mean much more than that you were able to sit in a classroom and complete assignments. I should know. I am working on my second advanced degree. Creatively developing and succeeding in small business is much more difficult. You'll be figuring that out, soon enough. In the meantime....GO MITCH!!
