Character counts

John Edwards is the lowest of human beings.

I am shocked and appalled at the Union Board’s decision to have former Sen. John Edwards speak to IU students. I am offended, disappointed and livid at the poor judgment exercised by the UB, College Democrats, Residence Halls Association and Provost Karen Hanson in this decision, which is encouraging, perpetuating and rewarding bad behavior.

The facts: In 2006, Edwards had an affair while his wife was mothering three children and recovering from breast cancer. In early 2008, Edwards ran an unsuccessful campaign for president. In August 2008, Edwards disclosed the news of his affair. The UB, funded by IU student fees, is paying Edwards $35,000 to speak for probably less than one hour on Nov. 11.

Edwards campaigned under a national lie.

Campaigning as someone in whom we should put our trust, to count as honest and to maintain integrity and character, Edwards neither exercised nor possesses any of these qualities. Because he didn’t tell us of his affair earlier this year prior to running for president, he is a liar.

We’re giving Edwards credibility and legitimacy. By paying Edwards $35,000, we’re embracing him with respect and a check – neither of which he deserves. The Democrat Party has distanced itself from Edwards, and IU should too.

It comes as no surprise that our country continues to embrace moral relativism. Now we know where it’s harbored: student and administration leaders such as these at Indiana University.

Andrew Dahlen, lectures director of UB, apparently thinks analyzing someone’s personal life “sets a dangerous precedent” for considering who’s qualified to speak here. Mr. Dahlen, when a presidential candidate blatantly lies to the country, it’s personal. When a presidential candidate disrespects his wife and women like this, it’s personal.

Mr. Dahlen, this is not a “hands-down win for IU students,” this is a hands-down loss for the University, which has apparently decided not to recognize character, integrity and honesty.

What a damning, embarrassing image this gives the University. What an opportunity to question the respect our University is due with poor judgment such as this.

The poor judgment exercised by UB members Liz Retana (ubpres@indiana.edu) and Andrew Dahlen (lecture@indiana.edu), IU College Democrats President Anna Strand (iudems@indiana.edu), the Residence Halls Association and Provost Karen Hanson (provost@indiana.edu) should be confronted. To all of you who made this decision, you are better than this.

What can we learn about character and judgment from Edwards? Why is the Democratic Party distancing itself from Edwards while IU is embracing him with a $35,000 check in hand?

I propose that Edwards donate his money to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America or a local non-profit poverty program he claims to represent like the Shalom Community Center.

Democrats, Republicans and Independents should agree that rejecting Edwards to speak is a commitment to holding ourselves accountable to great life values like integrity, honesty and character.

Please immediately contact those who were involved in this decision. Edwards speaking here is a grave mistake.

So now we can't listen to people speak if we don't like them? Okay then... He's not a person but has managed to to a lot of interesting things with his career. Some people could learn from his business life, just not his personal life.

It sounds to me that we are returning to two political positions, each of you are supporting your own scandal while damming the other's scandal. Think American first - forget party loyalty. The real issue here is that IU is spending $35,000 for a disgraced speaker no matter who he is. Tuitions are rising beyond the average family's means and IU is paying $35,000 for a speaker. Any speaker who demands and gets that kind of money in times of national hardship is dispicable, and the university board who facilitated it is a theif to every student on their campus. Not only is the stipend shameful, the speaker is also shameful....not a role model for young Americans.

John Edwards has great insight into how our government works, and he dared to say it aloud. http://www.johnedwards.com/news/speeches/20070621-reduce-debt/ It's no coincidence that our economy is only working for a few when Washington is only working for a few. "Since 1996, the number of Washington lobbyists has tripled to 36,000...It's 60 lobbyists for every member of Congress-a lot of them are more powerful than the members. Big insurance and pharmaceutical companies are writing our health care policies to ensure their own profits, not their customers' well being, while 45 million Americans go without health insurance and premiums skyrocket for everyone. Big oil companies and electric utilities are writing our nation's energy policies. No surprise, they are blocking the development of clean renewable energies we so desperately need, both to protect the environment and to stimulate a new wave of economic growth. Big financial interests are writing our economic policies " and while their profits are setting records, record numbers of families are going bankrupt and losing their homes. Sallie Mae and other banks are blocking efforts to make college more affordable and student debts smaller. Cable and telecommunications companies are blocking efforts to make high-speed Internet universal and affordable. Accounting software companies are blocking efforts to make it easier for you to do your taxes. Is it any wonder that so many hard-working, law-abiding middle class Americans feel as if the economic system is stacked against them? "

Edwards due to a request by Barack Obama agreed to not make public appearances until after the election. I wish, instead, John Edwards was free to fearlessly say again that the government, instead of putting money into the bank accounts of the unshamefull, and unrepentant Wall Street robbers and con men, should set up savings accounts for the average person on "main street': In July of 2007 Senator John Edwards, proposed the following solutions: "First, I will create a Family Savings and Credit Commission to make sure that financial services treat families safely. ...It will deal with all financial services ...It will ban the most abusive terms and make sure consumers understand the others. ...pass strong national laws protecting us against the worst abuses in credit markets predatory mortgages, abusive credit card terms, and payday loans with interest rates of 300 percent or higher. Finally, I will help create alternatives to abusive lenders. I will help working families build up a cushion by matching their savings and bringing bank accounts to the 56 million without them. And I will support non-profit groups offering affordable, short-term loans. We need a new era of responsible lenders who see families as long-term investments, not quick bucks. All across the economy, we need to do the same thing take on the special interests and put Washington back on the side of regular families. Hi Newsjunkie. What an enormous double standard! So if Edwards divorced his wife during her second bout of cancer instead of stopping the affair & coming back to his wife, his actions would be more respectable? Wow! New definition of morality, "Don't cheat without then dropping wife?"

Yuck: Please note our website never runs bylines for anyone. In the print edition of the paper, however, Justin's byline was 'Justin P. Hill is the chairman of Students for John McCain.' That is the best we can do at disclosing affiliations.

Another point you all fail to see is that McCain MARRIED the woman he cheated with. While that does not condone his action, it sure is better than just having sex with someone and then leaving them out to dry with what is reported to be your child.

Wow, I'm shocked and appalled that someone who claims to be a Christian, is so judgemental and focused on someone else's flaws. Why don't you take the plank out of your own eye before you start to judge what someone else has done for once, my friend.

Justin, you run the campus McCain group, so you have little room to talk on this issue. If Edwards is scum - which he is - than he is on the same shameful level as Sen. McCain. Sen. McCain is himself a common adulterer and divorcee who lives the most un-Christian of lives funded by his sin peddling second wife who prays on the weak, the troubled, and the addicted. It is truly shameful that you would support such a man and than have the audacity to claim such a holier than thou position on the Edwards issue. You owe all IDS readers an apology (as do your editors for failing to disclose your associations with the McCain campaign).

It seems, Ra, that you are implying that McCain being in a POW camp and leaving his wife to tend to children is the same as Edwards cheating on his wife and campaigning while leaving her to tend to their children. That is despicable. McCain was out there on the verge of death defending his country, while Edwards just wanted to get some. On the dissolution of his marriage, McCain acknowledges his immaturity in the situation, and he still supports and is on good terms with his first wife. This is COMPLETELY different than Edwards cheating on his wife who is DIEING of cancer. Maybe you should actually read things that you cite before using them, as all of that is in in Wiki article.

Comparisons to McCain are considerably faulty. The primary difference between McCain and Edwards is that McCain admitted his mistakes of 30 years ago and considers it a point of personal shame. Edwards used his wife's health and their relationship as campaign elements and criticized others who had had failings in their relationships. That hypocrisy was what caused the Edwards scandal to be what it was.

Justin- Funny to see you back in the IDS! Where have you been this semester? But let me get this straight - you support John McCain (cheated on his handicapped wife, cheats on his current wife) for President of the United States, but you don't support Edwards coming to speak for one day? That's a bit of a double standard, isn't it?

Posted by Ra at 1:39 AM on Oct 09, 2008 | Report this comment

Justin, let's talk about your double standard and blatant political pandering. You call Edwards "the lowest of human beings" because he cheated on and abandoned his wife when she was going through health problems. Let me direct you to a NY Times article and a Wikipedia entry: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B02EFDF1439F934A15751C0A9669 C8B63 , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_McCain Now what this article explains is a well-known biographical fact about John McCain (whom I know you fervently support and I'm sure wouldn't mind made an appearance on campus). This small detail is that while he was a POW in Vietnam, his wife Carol McCain had a car accident, went through 23 operations and was left tied to a wheelchair. All this while raising and supporting their 3 children alone. After coming back from war and realizing his wife had lost the use of her legs and gained substantial weight, Mr. McCain began dating his current wife Cindy. This was in April 1979. One year later, in April 1980, he divorced Carol. ONE MONTH later, he married Cindy. According to Ross Perot - who paid for Carol's hospital bills - Senator McCain "threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona". Talk about "the lowest of human beings". Now, this might come without saying, but this article strikes me as EXTREMELY ironic given that you support Mr McCain with so much enthusiasm and reject Mr Edwards with so much hatred. Justin, PLEASE think a little before you write your ridiculous articles. If you are going to be so obviously politically dirty, at least make sure you have a compelling argument so you don't make a complete fool of yourself. Character counts alright. And you and Mr McCain are disqualified.

Good work Justin. We need accountability from administrative positions as well as politicians. CALL THEM OUT!
