Crean tip-toes around student section questions

Despite Assembly Hall’s most well-known chant being “Stand Up, Old People” the most highly-discussed topic revolving around the stadium’s seating is where the young people will sit.

During his lecture’s Q&A session Monday night, three different students asked Crean about the possibility of a “unified” student section.

Crean carefully tip-toed around the questions before apologizing he couldn’t “give you any concrete answers.”

Though the Hoosiers sold 9,100 tickets to students last year – among the largest student section in the nation – there has been consistent pressure for years from the students to unify their efforts.

Crean said that he isn’t involved in the seating at Assembly Hall but said he was discouraged when he heard students hadn’t been showing up on time for tip-off last season.

After discussing the student section for awhile, Crean told a story about how at Marquette he helped unify the student section and all of the students eventually wore gold shirts or gold sweater vests. When he asked the audience if they would like the student section to be unified the crowd erupted.

“I would like that too. Is that something you all would like to do? Wear the same t-shirt or something like that? Well then, that’s something that has to be looked at,” he said.

“Give me time. Give me time to look at that. And we’ll go from there. We have to pack Hoosier Hysteria first, no matter if we have shirts on or not.”

Just so you know, where people are seated is determined by the Ticket Office head. Crean has no authority on seating. Show those in charge there's a serious demand for a unified student section!

If you asked most people (most well-known) about chants at assembly hall, I am pretty sure that one of the top three would be stand up old people!!! Just a guess. It does not have to be a 100 year old chant to be the most well known. Leave the kid alone.

Indiana students need to show more interest to get a student section. Write letters or email to those in charge. Join the facebook group "Stand up old people" Indiana Students Take Back Our Student Section. Hold a rally or something, but just be crazy and if enough STUDENTS do this, then the adminstration will surely allow a student section. Indiana is where basketball is king and the most important, and if one of the best basketball colleges in the World doesn't have a student section, then that is just ludacris and insane.

Indiana definitely needs a student section. Even Dick Vitale said that IU could have the loudest student section if it was unified around the court. It would definitely make the crowd louder and there would be a great deal of enthuiasim. Hopefully, Crean or someone else, makes student section shirts and creates a unified student section, so teams will be intimidated like they are at Duke. Let's get this done and have all teams face the ferrucious IU fans!!

Hey Matt, I bet a general rule of journalism is not to assume that you knew more about a subject then some of your readers do because you most assuredly know poo about some of the traditions of Assembly Hall. Stand up old people is not one of them. This old person would come early , stay late and be a part of one of the best, not obnoxious, crowds in college basketball. You guys need to rock that place this year. You can create a place where people don't like to play.

Great idea! This team is going to need all the support than can get. This will be a painful season so give them your total support, Win or Lose!

Good story on an ongoing and prevelant issue plaguing Assembly Hall for a number of years. The headline says it all.

There had to be something else to write about today Matt. Do us all a favor and stay out of Assembly Hall.

This article lacks any journalistic merit whatsoever. Tom Crean was coaching Marquette last year, not taking notes on the IU student section. This is a non-issue and I bet Crean is laughing at this writer. Besides that chant sucks and it isn´t even worth mentioning.

Stand up old people is not the most well-known chant at IU basketball games. Matt, you obviously have not been involved with basketball games ever because that chant is new and disrespectful. In fact, count how many times it is said this year and add that up with how many times it was said last year and you'll get a small number. Don't count the few small groups of loud and drunk freshman-juniors that are there to act cool while the girls are around. The most well-known chants are probably when the students say players' names. So do you research before you say something stupid like that in IU's very credible (yea right) student news paper.
