IU selects search committee for new athletic director

The search to find a successor for IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan has officially begun.

IU President Michael McRobbie announced Friday that he has selected a search committee to find a new athletics director. On June 26, Greenspan announced he would resign his position effective at the end of the calander year.

McRobbie has appointed a 13-member committee comprising  faculty, administrators, alumni and Athletic Department representatives to conduct the search. At the head of the committee is Bill Stephan, IU’s vice president for engagement.

“I am extremely pleased that Bill Stephan has agreed to lead this important search,” McRobbie said in a statement. “Bill’s long standing commitment to excellence at Indiana University and the strong personal and professional relationships he has cultivated across the state make him the ideal person to chair this committee.”

Stephan’s current role is to “assume statewide responsibility for economic development programs and initiatives”, according to a June 2007 press release from IU media relations. Previously, Stephan was IU’s vice president of university relations and corporate partnerships.

“I look forward to working with President McRobbie, our very accomplished committee and our many friends and supporters of IU, all of whom are committed to bringing forth exceptional candidates,” Stephan said.

Stephan also served on the search committee that recommended current IU basketball coach Tom Crean.

The committee will not be commenting on the progress of the search until the decision on Greenspan’s successor is announced.

I think there are some excellent ADs out there and I am excited to see who we select to lead us for years to come. Here is my short list: Gene Bleymeyer Boise State Mario Mocca Southern Illinois Tom Collins Ball State Chet Gladchuk Navy Bubba Cunningham Tulsa Each has talent and a successful record. Some have understanding of Midwest and BCS experience.

"Genocide, starvation, inflation, poverty, climate change, violence, war" I'm guessing you think the condition of the roads in Indiana, the economy, and other local issues are trivial too, since most everything you named is a global thing, and not a problem attributed to a small group. You're probably also the kind of person who would rather focus on everyone elses problems, as opposed to our own. Basketball may not be earth shattering, but it's important to some people. They may all be slaves, but so are you, too whatever Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Save the Whales, Feed Africa trendy movement is going on this week. No one is going to fix all those problems at once, but you seem to think they can. And the harder you fail, the harder you try again. Find validation in something simpler. You can't change the world.

This ought to teach McRobster a lesson; don't spite students, especially the influential ones, cuz they're gonna come after you. I'm glad we have strong student leaders at IU, who are willing to stand up for Student's Rights and are watchful even in the summer time. McRobbie- don't try pulling this kind of crap again! And do remember that there are actually students that go to school on this campus. I know being isolated in Bryan Hall. this fact sometimes escapes you.

Who said that this is/was a minute problem!? IU athletics is what gets IU known nationally, that's how alumni keep connected with IU, that's why its prestigious to be an IU trustee-court side seats to basketball games, that's why a lot of donors give big bucks to the university, that's why a lot of students come to IU. With the basketball scandal last year, there is a lot of attention on this. It is only fair that students be part of a conversation which will be much more about IU athletics as a whole, than the search for a new AD.

What about the rights of students to engage themselves in issues that are actually consequential? It's time to turn off ESPN and engage yourselves with the reality-based world (it's a radical notion, I understand). You know, it never ceases to amaze me when people engage themselves so intensely in issues that matter very little (usually sports related), but when it comes to the issues that matter to 99.99% of the world's population, apathy is the norm. Seriously, wake the fuck up.

If you could come down from your cloud and actually read the article you would know that IU did not name a new athletic director, but selected a student to serve on the committee in search of one. I agree that this is a minute problem, but student's rights are important to the readers of this fine Web site.

Genocide, starvation, inflation, poverty, climate change, violence, war, yet the issue of the day eliciting the most emotional responses is announcement of the new athletic director. You people do realize that this is of very, very little consequence, correct?

I'm glad McRobbie came around here and appointed a student. It is important for IU senior administrators to realize that student involvement is essential in the decision making at an institution whose mission is all about students.

"Just as a point of reference, there are no student fees allocated to Athletics as of FY 2006." I said the Athletic Dept. not Athletics, I'm not sure what you are driving at. What about the fees that the club sports teams must pay to use the sports facilities? Greenspan was the person who created them. And prior to 2006 was there not an assessment to reduce the debt that the Athletic Dept. had accumulated. Given the history of assessing students fees to cover items like employment contracts that remain in force after the employee has left, one can conclude that using the students as a source of funding for the Athletic Dept. will not be totally taken off the table any time soon.

how is email or facebook going to convince anyone to do anything? and how is the athletic director position a concern to students (maybe student athletes have a point)? is it such a injustice for a student not to be involved in choosing an athletic director? will a student voice get us an athletic director who is so good that my classes will be smaller and will make my profs care and then increase my financial aid and make my apartment cheaper and get IU to do use alternative energy and do more recycling? choose your battles, already. so who is this alexandra and who really - and i mean REALLY - cares about this? she's just another 'leader' who focuses on irrelevant stuff in order to keep us focused on her and her agenda. who's worse - her or mcrobby? i'll call it a tie.

Well stated, Tom. Thanks for lending a well-reasoned perspective to an otherwise typical series of responses.

It is a reasonable request to have a student on the committee. Student fees support the Athletic Department and the students are at the mercy of Athletic Dept. decisions like Greenspan deciding to charge club sports for the use of facilities (with no advanced warning, I might add). However the way to do this is to first go to the Student member of the Board of Trustees and get him involved. That is his job and the Trustees have the authority to make the addition. Filling people's mail boxes with disjointed messages will accomplish little if anything, this is will not be solved through "death by a million cuts". Alexandra should put together a well reasoned and researched position statement including the major points and stress the amount of financial support that is supplied by the student body. Also stress that today's student body are tomorrow’s potential donors to I.U. Put that up on Facebook and get the signatures. Then present it to the appropriate members of the administration. Sending angry emails, which amounts to the 21st century equivalent of “storming the Bastille” is a waste of time and effort if you are serious about getting student input on this matter.

So - having a student on the committee will help get the best AD that IU can get? And what does Alexandra or any student know about running a Division 1 athletic department? And how will a student representative on the committee make the committee's assessment of candidates any stronger? The oversimplification of the "issue" (it's not an issue at all) is typical of the perspective that AC always spouts. She waives the red flag, presents inaccurate facts (as she did in her post yet again), and acts as if she somehow speaks for the students. (And since when was she appointed to this Student VOICE Project? Is this another title she has given herself?) **IUSA** speaks for the students. Sadly, IUSA has become a useless organization that can't even get candidates to run and never does anything worthwhile for the students. Maybe Alex should focus on bringing IUSA back to some respectable functioning level and then the administration will take us seriously. But I don't blame the administration for distancing itself from students who only know how to complain. Maybe if we used the energy spent whining on getting IUSA back and useful again? Alexandra has a right to her opinion but here we go again - another facebook page representing passive activism.

I appreciate everyone's support, but lets keep explicatives and obscenities to a minimum here. We don't want them to be a distraction from the cause. We need to be very assertive on this matter, but we need to do so civilly.

Hopefully a lot of students will raise noise about this! i am not happy that senior administrators willfully disregard students on matters that are important to the students! We need to all come together here and put a student on the comittee!

Concerning indeed. McRobbie was not right here. Alexandra should be commended for demanding student representation on the committee. And students have a right to be upset about this. Hopefully the petition will gain strength and IU Administration will admit the error of their way here. Students need to be considered, especially on such a high profile committee.

Alexandra is right here, Students need to send angry e-mails to McRobbie and make him appoint a student to the committee. This just isn't right. Students need to be involved on this one! Proud IU Alum

Did McRobbie even consider involving student? What is this !!!! Athletics is important to students. BUT IU has NO STUDENT BASKETBALL SECTION and NO STUDENT INVOLVEMENT on the comittee for new AD. I think IU Administration has made their view on student plenty clear here. With their actions they have spelled loudly: IU ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS!

JOIN FACEBOOK GROUP: "Petition to get a Student on IU Committee to select new Athletic Director"

1. Posted by Alexandra Chtchedrina at 10:28 PM on Aug 03, 2008 | Report this comment

On August 1st, President McRobbie named a committee to select the new IU Athletic Director, to replace Rick Greenspan who recently resigned after NCAA levied yet another sanction on the IU Men’s Basketball Program. Yet he appointed NO STUDENT to serve on the committee. For a full story go to newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/8607.html. If you will recall, NO Bloomington students served on the selection committees for the following: 1.IU President 2. Director of Residential Programs (RPS) and Services 3. Director of Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Now IU administration is trying to exclude students from the selection of the new Athletic Director. This is another staffing choice that has a major impact on the student body, yet student’s opinion and input is not being considered. If you are dissatisfied with the continuous exclusion of students form decision making processes the outcomes of which have a sizable effect on students at this university, then I urge you to voice your concerns strongly. We, the students, need to make our opinions known. We need to put an end to exclusion which has become a trend in the past two years. We need to let the administration know that we simply won’t take such treatment any longer. If you feel as I do, - that students have a right to be heard on this matter and are being unjustly excluded from the selection of the new athletic director by the IU Administration, please e-mail President McRobbie and the Chair of the Search Committee Bill Stephan. Chair of the Search Committee Bill Stephan wstephan@indiana.edu President McRobbie mcrobbie@indiana.edu Bruce Jaffee jaffee@indiana.edu ( faculty representative) And please, invite any interested friends to this group,- there is strength in numbers. Sincerely, Alexandra Chtchedrina Co-Chair, Student VOICE Project
