A diverse crowd of more than 200 people took over the McNutt Residence Center for Korean Night on Friday.

“Korean Night is about sharing our culture with other people at IU who might be interested or just simply curious,” said Jung Eun Yun, secretary of the Korean Student Association.

Yun said this year’s Korean Night was the student association’s third annual event. Hyunmok Hong and Hyun-Seok Oh, the hosts of the event, introduced the 2008 Korean Night’s theme of “passion and Korean pride” and led the program in both Korean and English. Five performances represented both traditional and modern Korean culture. A Korean band called “Samulnori” played traditional Korean music, and six women wearing Korean dresses performed a traditional fan dance called “Buchaechum.” An IU Korean rock band called RNS sang a contemporary version of the Korean national anthem along with the country’s well-known folk song “Arirang.” The IU B-Boys were the last performers, break-dancing to both Korean and American hip-hop songs.

Students of a variety of different backgrounds and ethnicities attended and enjoyed the event.

“I really liked the show because everyone was friendly and I thought everything was informational,” said junior Rosalyn Wells.

Yun said the Korean Student Association hopes to continue “Korean Night” and invite more people next year so other people can experience and learn about both traditional and modern Korean culture.

“I think it’s important that we continuously host this event because it’s our chance to show other students who are not familiar with Korea what Korea is all about,” Yun said.
