Barack Obama surprises students at Little 500, Nick's

April 14 -- Barack Obama crashed the Little 500 women’s race with a surprise appearance on campus and then traveled in his motorcade to Nick’s English Hut where he shook hands with all of the patrons inside.

Cutters rider, coach arrested for battery hours after Little 500 win

April 14 -- Bloomington police officers arrested Cutters rider Sasha Land and head coach Jim Kirkham for battery around midnight Saturday after the two got into an altercation with an employee of Nick’s English Hut, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Joe Sanders said.

April 09 -- IU Foundation President Curt Simic still has cinders in his hands, knees and elbows from his first Little 500 riding experience almost 50 years ago – just a few of the impacts the race has had on his life that do not seem to go away. And don’t expect the impacts that Simic has had on the race, to go away any time soon either.

April 11 -- The months of intense training are now over. All of the series events have been completed. For riders, today is finally the day. The 21st Women’s Little 500 is here. The much-anticipated event will begin at 4 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium with 32 teams competing for the crown.

Cutters triumph as 1st team to repeat as champions since 1981

April 14 -- On a cold and wet afternoon, the Cutters won their ninth Little 500 championship, becoming the first team to repeat as champions at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

April 09 -- Although Kappa Delta easily took the 2007 Little 500 crown, 2008 appears to be much different.

35 years of memories

April 09 -- Nancy Macklin has a black and white photo of the old Little 500 stadium on 10th Street, dated April 26, 1980. She can point to the spot near the first turn where she and her medical staff set up a tent during her first Little 500 in 1973. Macklin, now the director of nursing at the IU Health Center, has not missed a race in 35 years, but can still recall her first one like it was yesterday.

April 09 -- Last year’s men’s Little 500 came down to a thrilling sprint to the finish between five teams. While top riders such as Cutters’ Alex Bishop, Dodds House’s Chris Chartier and Phi Kappa Psi’s Erik Styacich have moved on, this year’s race offers plenty of individual talent.

Delta Gamma is next in line

April 09 -- In the 20 years that women have been able to compete in the Little 500, only three sororities – Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta – have ever been crowned champion. This year, Delta Gamma wants to be added to the list.

Phi Kappa Tau returns to race for first time since 1992

April 09 -- After the Phi Kappa Tau riders completed a successful qualification run, they couldn’t hide the excitement on their faces. Not only had they not qualified for the Little 500 since 1992, but their time of 2:28.92 left them in 10th place.

Teter, Cutters win Team Pursuit

April 07 -- Heading into this weekend’s Team Pursuit competition, both Teter and Cutters had large leads in the overall standings based on their individual performances. It was only fitting that they continued their reign on top with victories.

Riders ready for final tune-up

April 04 -- Individual Time Trials showed which rider is the fastest after four laps. Miss-N-Out showed which rider can out-race the competition. Thus far, the Little 500 series events have only determined the top individuals. Until now.

March 31 -- Teter senior Sarah Rieke could not have dreamt of a better scenario for Saturday’s Miss-N-Out. Not only did she win her second consecutive Miss-N-Out title, but she did so with three teammates.

March 31 -- After finishing second last year by a mere two seconds, team Cream wanted to come out strong and show the rest of the women’s field what they could do. Mission accomplished.

Spring series runs annual Miss-N-Out

March 28 -- With Little 500 race day quickly approaching, the second spring series event, Miss-N-Out, will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at at Bill Armstrong Stadium. While Individual Time Trials tested the sprinting ability of the riders, Miss-N-Out represents a much different challenge.

Sigma Alpha Mu, Teter win Little 500 pole positions

March 24 -- Teter had the fastest time for the women, winning the pole position – the best starting position on race day – with an unofficial time of 2:39.45. Sigma Alpha Mu, a team who finished 11th in last year’s race, earned the first-place green jersey for the men with an unofficial time of 2:23.20.

Former top teams falter in Little 500 qualifications

March 25 -- The last time senior Cutters rider Erik Hamilton and his teammates competed in a Little 500 cycling event, they ended up raising the first-place trophy in triumph.

March 27 -- Heading into Wednesday night’s Individual Time Trials, all eyes were on last year’s Individual Time Trial champion and record-holder, Teter senior Sarah Rieke. Someone forgot to tell Wing It junior Kristi Hewitt.

Riders get an early start on training

October 11 -- The IU Student Foundation Fall Cycling Series kicked off with the first of three events Oct. 7 with the men’s and women’s Cyclocross at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Katie Haft and Pam Loebig – who competed on different teams in last year’s Little 500 – won the women’s race, while Tyler George and Andy Haas of Delta Sigma Pi rode away with the men’s title.
