Members of the 9/11 Commission will reflect how that tragic day shaped American life, national security and political policy during the last 10 years.

The event, “Ten Years Later: The 9/11 Commissioners Reflect,” will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15th at the IU Auditorium.

Eight of the 10 commissioners will be in Bloomington to take questions from the public, moderated by Ken Bode. Bode is a former NBC News national correspondent and CNN political analyst.

The commissioners were invited to campus by former U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton, who is the director of IU’s Center on Congress. Hamilton was the vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission.

Hamilton said the questions will not be screened. He said the commissioners want to hear stories from IU students, who have been called “Generation 9/11.”

The deadline to submit questions online for commissioners is 5 p.m. Monday. Students can submit questions at http://www.iub.edu/sept11.

“This is the first time all of us will have been together since we went out of business in 2004,” Hamilton said.

He admitted it sounds odd, but Hamilton said he is looking forward to seeing
his fellow commissioners, discussing how their recommendations faired and evaluating what has happened since the report was published on July 22, 2004.

Then-President George W. Bush and Congress established the commission to assemble a complete depiction of the facts surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The commission developed recommendations to prevent future acts of terrorism against the United States, which they published in a 624-page book that became a nationwide best-seller.

“It is a singular event in our history that left a profound impact on our lives,” Hamilton said. “It is the single most tragic day in the history of this country. The America which you and your peers grew up in was profoundly shaped by 9/11.”
