This now-classic Japanese crime drama is produced with philosophical and psychological overtones. In ancient Japan, a woman is raped and her husband killed. The film gives us four viewpoints of the incident, one for each defendant, each revealing a little more detail. Who is telling the truth? What is truth? Rashomon’s winning of the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 1951 worked to introduce Kurosawa, and arguably Japanese film itself, to Europe and the international film festival circuit. Dir. Akira Kurosawa, 1950. In Japanese with English subtitles. 88 mins.

TWELVE, Music About Transformation

TWELVE, Music About Transformation. A suite of extraordinary virtuosity and imagination depicting popular scenes and landscapes of his native Spain, it was the composer's final work for piano. He completed it in 1908, and by the Spring of 1909, he had died of chronic kidney disease. This performance will mark the 100th anniversary of his passing. It will also pay homage to the extraordinary Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha, who recorded the work with unsurpassable mastery, and whose last masterclass in the U.S. took place in Auer Hall in the summer of 2005. De Larrocha passed away on September 25 this year.
