2010 burning questions: ‘How I Met Your Mother’

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

With 2010 upon us, it’s time to look forward to what’s to come. Thus, I’m going to spend the next 10 days or so discussing important questions I have for some of my faves. The questions will cover anything from plot points to industry chatter. Whatever topic, these are the questions everyone will be asking.

Next up: How I Met Your Mother

Q1: Will Robin and Barney reconnect by the end of the season?

I know that the Robin-Barney pairing was a popular one among the series’ fans and when Bays and Thomas decided to make it only last eight or nine episodes, that large group of people was pretty pissed. I was mixed on the end of their relationship as well, especially because it seems like Barney has fallen back to his pre-Robin ways ever since. Obviously, we all love Barney being Barney, but some change has to come eventually.

Thus, one has to wonder if there will be any reconnection between the two by the end of the season? And if there is not, I would at least like to see the two of them talk about their relationship a little bit more. Aside from a few scenes in “The Playbook,” Robin and Barney haven’t really shared a heartfelt or important conversation since the break-up. It seems realistic that the two of them will end up together sometime and they have to talk about the first break-up some more before they can move on — whether that’s together or not.

Q2: What will we learn about the Mother?

The next episode of the series is the 100th and big things have been promised in relation to the Mother. Rachel Bilson is lined up to appear in ep and she would be an amazing choice for the Mother. But longtime fans of the series know how these things go: a press release comes out about a major actress guest starring and we all get worked up about how they might be the Mother. And they never are. Even when we’re supposed to get “major information” is some weak sauce about an umbrella. Or a classroom. Boo.

At this point, the series doesn’t really need the Mother gimmick to keep it going. Most fans of the series appreciate the relationships between the five major characters way more than they care about who Ted’s future wife is. In fact, I’d love to see the Mother introduced and we actually get to see her relationship with Ted played out over the course of the series. That would be much more effective than ending with Ted bumping into her somewhere and then Saget saying “and that’s how I met your mother” in the series finale.
