This weeks episode of ‘Bones’ does a very satisfying job of mixing plot development, welcoming old characters, and very entertaining moments.

The episode starts out with Booth on the shooting range and up for re certification in just over a week for his firearm. Booth’s firearm skills would normally make this a no-brainer but as re reels the target back from the range the audience sees that the shots are going wild everywhere. This sets up the personal side of the episode, and with Booth in a conundrum of going to Sweets with this problem because of his duty to report on agent’s mental health he decides to seek out an old friend.

Gordon Gordon is just as charming as when we last saw him and his interactions with the various members of the team in determening exactly what Booths problem is are amount the best parts of the episode. In particular, the scene where he and Sweets discuss “Agent Bs” problem and Gordon asks if the reason why Sweets didn’t publish he book on Booth was because he came to the conclusion that he and Bones were in love. they come to the conclusion that Booth’s descision to not act on his feeling for fear of hurting Bones are the real source of his problems. Also, the scenes where Gordon and Sweets interrogate suspects together provide great moments of entertainment.

The supposed main element of the story, the killing of a dwarf wrestler, follows the ‘Bones’ tradition of taking a backseat to the personal side. However, in this instance it actually is done very well. The resolution of the episode involves Sweets and Gordon figuring out at the same time who killed the victim which turns out to be a common jealous brother scenario. Sweets doesn’t tell Booth all of his conclusions for obvious reasons but he does suggest to take Bones with him to his evaluation because he believes that Booth “won’t let himself fail in front of her.”
