I’m always wary about Halloween specials. Costumes always take on some creepy significance, the writers always play with some terrible pun, and they constantly attempt to scare you. Well, color me happy, because this episode was quite simply a treat.

Sorry about the late update everyone, but if you’re anything like a normal person that watches South Park, you’ve already watched the episode, re-watched the episode, submitted your entry for the “locate the alien contest” and desperately scoured the South Park website for a way to download Cartman’s rendition of “Poker Face,” which was the best part of Wednesday night’s episode. “30 Rock” continued to have strong material exploring the blue state vs. red state, high culture vs. low divide this week, with Liz and Jack setting off on a road trip to Stone Mountain, Ga., to find a new cast member who will appeal to “middle America.”

This week’s Modern Family was a lesson in parenting children, babies…and husbands. The children may have been in school last week (were these episodes aired out of order?), but it’s the first day of school and everyone is learning some important lessons. Read the rest of this entry »

The Top Chef kitchen is a bit glum this episode. Jennifer is miserable, the brothers are feuding and everyone still hates Robin. Of course, some angst on apart of the Chefs isn’t going to stop a Quickfire Challenge.
Enter Padma with guest chef Paul Bartolotta. They inform the Chefs that this contest was inspired by the folks over at TV Guide and they’ve been asked to prepare a TV Dinner style meal in the theme of a classic TV series. So it’s off to draw knives and see what wonderful things the Chefs can come up with under pressure. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty disappointing.
Kevin pulls “The Sopranos” and goes on this long explanation about how close his family is and how his grandmother still cooks breakfast for them all blah, blah, blah. He makes meatballs and wins. His prize? The meal will be featured on Schwan’s home delivered frozen dinners. Honestly, the money was so much better than this.
For the Elimination Challenge the Chefs are invited to CraftSteak. They think they’re cooking meat until Tom comes in with Natalie Portman in toe. After everyone is over the excitement she confesses that she’s a vegetarian, so no meat tonight.
I have to admit, the Chefs do a terrible job. I cook vegan food all the time and come up with more delicious dishes than they were able to manage. It’s a piss poor thing what some people can’t do with vegetables. Anyway, surprise surprise Kevin wins again with his mixture of mushroom, smoked kate, roasted turnips and turnip puree. Mike V is pissed at hearing this because he says he could make that dish as a second year apprentice. Hell, I could make that now as a junior in college but that’s not the point. What is the point is that it’s Mike I who goes home, not Robin for her admittedly ill conceived dish. Is it a ratings ploy to keep the most polarizing character on the show and boot someone with actual talent? Probably, but Mike I was an asshole so it could have been worse.

When the 6 remaining designs come before Heidi at the beginning of this episode, they are sitting with their backs to the runway. Then they are allowed to turn around, and find each of their best looks on the stage. Heidi announces the challenge: create a companion piece to go with your best look. The second look must complement the first, but must also be distinctly different. Read the rest of this entry »

Ah, here we are. My first Parks and Recreation episode recap since gloriously triumphing over all the other NBC comedies in a debate that made the Lincoln-Douglas debates look like…well, never mind. The point is, a consensus was reached that the 8:30 slot dominates Thursday nights, and Amy Poehler must have listened to the podcast, because this is a shining example of how wonderful the show has become. And oh yes, it was Halloween-themed.
