SUPERNATURAL is one of the best genre television programs in recent memory. Though there are certainly more than this, I’ll be looking at the 20* best episodes just in time for the season five premiere on 9/10.
*I couldn’t keep the list to 20, so it’s now a 25-episode list with a few ties. Read the rest of this entry »

The big news today in the entertainment industry centered around Disney’s announcement that they are buying Marvel Comics for $4 billion.
Disney noted that most of the Marvel properties like the comics division and the current film deals that various properties have with studios (like “Spiderman” and Sony or Paramount and their huge slate coming in the next 2-3 years) will stay in place. After the current deals properties have in place in the films division, Disney will then distribute those films. On the comic side of things, expect this to be much like Time Warner’s handling of DC Comics — very hands-off unless there are any major problems.
But obviously, this decision opens up the Marvel universe to the marketing, distribution and producing power that comes with being a Disney property. Variety’s story on the matter notes that the Disney firepower will allow Marvel to build a bigger fan base overseas, something that’s of growing importance to them. On the other side of the coin, the Marvel factor allows Disney to have a product (or number of products) that is targeted at younger males.
This seems like a good deal all-around, but there will be complications surrounding all the deals currently in place. It will be interesting to follow this over the next few years. And just for fun, check out the ever-awesome CHUD’s list of 10 DC properties that Pixar (another Disney partner) should make into films.

One of the things that ticked me off most about last season of HOUSE was how the character of Lucas (played by the always awesome Michael Weston) was handled.
The private eye was introduced to play off of House while he was having relationship issues with Wilson, but when the writers (as they always do) decided to snip the House-Wilson drama pretty short for what happened between them, Lucas disappeared without really any mention.
Well, according to the scooping SOB Ausiello, Weston has been tapped to return to HOUSE for at least one episode this season. Nothing is known about his return, so it’s very possible that Weston could be a patient in an upcoming cases, which would certainly be interesting. Either way, great news.

I know people always say “nothing happens” on MAD MEN, but last night’s ep really drove that point home. And yet, I found it pretty enjoyable nonetheless. In the season’s third effort, Don was pushed to the fringe of the action, Peggy tried pot and Roger continued to act like a man unaware that the world was passing him by in many respects.
Uneven amongst the slow-moving plot of last night’s episode, I noticed that the theme of change was still present, along with more easily-noticeable nods to class and maneuvering between classes. More in-depth thoughts on “My Old Kentucky Home” after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Though it is never thought of as one of the top shows on television, SMALLVILLE sure has been around for a long time. With the season nine premiere a little more than a month away, I’ll count down the best episodes in SMALLVILLE history every day until 901, “Savior” on September 25th. Read the rest of this entry »

Even though it sucks and all of its ratings decreased last season, illegal dowloaders sure love HEROES.
A recent report by measurement firm Big Champagne noted that almost 55 million HEROES torrents were downloaded over the past year. Wow. I guess the show is geek-friendly, but I thought many of those folks turned on the show since its gone down the toliet — and rightfully so.
But I hope there comes a day that these illegal downloads can be infiltrated into the numbers with other ratings (Live, DVR 7-day, etc.) so we can actually see the real number of people watching these shows. HEROES averaged around 7-8 million viewers this year, but if you divide the 55 million torrents by the number of episodes, that’s at least another million viewers per ep. Better for HEROES, better for NBC.
Except the show still sucks.

For a while now, SUPERNATURAL and its creator Eric Kripke have been on a five-year plan.
But with the show’s ratings improving and the buzz around it growing throughout season four, it came as no surprise when Kripke noted at Comic-Con that the program could past 2010, even though he’s not contracted to do so. This is the CW we’re talking about. They’ve dragged SMALLVILLE out for nine years.
Well, today Ausiello reported that the program will end in 2010. Sort of. Read the rest of this entry »

Oh my. Talk about geek-bait.
Ever since DOLLHOUSE was given a second season and TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONCILES was not given a third, fans have been clamoring for Summer Glau, star of the latter, to appear on the former. Due to her connection with DOLLHOUSE’s creator Joss Whedon through her starring role on FIREFLY, it seemed like a perfect fit.
And it is. As numerous outlets reported today, Glau will join DOLLHOUSE as a recurring character. Let’s hope it’s not as a doll. Based on her characters in FIREFLY and T:SCC, I’d love to see Glau play an innocent woman that isn’t some sort of fighter or action hero. Let’s seem some Glau range, like the awesome T:SCC ep, “Allison From Palmdale” did. Please?
