Magnolia Electric Co.'s Jason Molina.
Roots were rocked last night at Russian Recording as Bloomington’s own Magnolia Electric Co. were joined by San Diego time travelers The Donkeys for the kickoff of their 2009 Summer Tour. The show, broadcast live on WFHB Bloomington Community Radio, drew a crowd that thoroughly packed Russian Recording’s small live room and spilled out into the hallway outside. And I dare say they weren’t disappointed, as both bands; known, respectively, more for tending towards the melancholy (Magnolia Electric Co.) and the laid-back (The Donkeys); interspersed their ballads with surprising turns into wild beats and guitar-heroism in sets that focused heavily on material from their newest albums. In short: the metaphorical posterior was given a taste of the boot, and you should’ve been there to see it. Photos are below.

Sadly, the best group shot I could get. Like I said: the joint was packed!

Co-vocalist and keyboardist Anthony Lukens, live on WFHB!

Guitarist Jessie Gulati in the midst of a solo.

Co-vocalist and drummer Sam Sprague.
Magnolia Electric Co.

Again: Packed!

Jason Molina again, looking like he could use a hug.

Jason Groth (also of The Coke Dares) on guitar.

Pete Schreiner (also of The Coke Dares as well) on bass.

Easily my favorite photo of the night.
Hey folks,
With Little 5(party time) and finals(study time), we’ve all been a little bogged down and negligent of our blogging duties. Sure you guys know what I’m talkin’ about.
But those of us that are sticking around this summer are super pumped for some sweet shows(Grizzly Bear, Sunset Rubdown, Julie Doiron, etc. etc.)
For you lucky bastards done with the school year or aren’t in crisis mode, here are some suggestions for upcoming shows:
TONIGHT: No! MTV Raps @ Farm. I’ll be there, dancing my stress away.
May 3: Jeremy Jay @ Bear’s. $6. Facebook’d.
May 4: Screaming Females, Tammar, Prizzy Prizzy Please @ Cinemat. Facebook’d. ALL AGES!

May 5:
Alexander The Great CD Release Show with MOCK ORANGE @ Bluebird. Facebook’d

Bowerbirds w/La Strada @ Bear’s. Facebook’d.
Love,
Stefania

Our Dino Jr. preview also came out today. Remember- even if you’re not 21 you can go to the Lou Barlow in-store at Landlocked Music tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Starting promptly at 9:30 p.m. at the Cinemat, a mélange of some of Bloomington’s best local bands and two nationally known indie rock bands–
Crystal Stilts and
Woods–will inject a very much needed dose of rhythm and energy into IU student’s week-after-spring-break hangover blues.

If you’re a fan of the show LOST — and we’re talking a somewhat obsessive, slightly scary fan — you may have noticed that there are repeated references to a 1970’s band named Geronimo Jackson. Well, last week’s episode featured a song from Geronimo Jackson which triggered speculation that the group might be none other than Dead Oceans artists and Southern California retro-rockers The Donkeys!
Pitchfork has the full story — but I just thought I’d note that there’s a Bloomington connection to all this. The Donkeys played the Cinemat back on September 15, 2008, which was the first show covered here on Live Buzz! $tefania was there to blog about it, and audience member David Hassell gave us some pics.
So, here’s what I want to know: were you there to see it? How was it? Were there mysterious guys in tan jumpsuits there? Judging by this pic of $tefania, it looks like there was indeed some time travel involved…
