Nolden named IU Scholar of the Month

Sophomore outfielder Will Nolden has been named IU Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January, this afternoon.

After redshirting in the 2011 season, the sophomore played in 50 games last season, starting in 38 of them in either right or left field.

He played in two of the three games to open the season this past weekend, recording two hits while his team went 2-1 in the opening weekend series.

Last year, Nolden got progressively better as the season wore along. He batted .260 for the year, while upping his game in conference play, going .292 in Big Ten action. Holden finished the year strong by batting .394 in the final month of the season.

Nolden, a double major in Spanish and Sociology, is not recognized solely for his on-field play, but also his accomplishments off the diamond.

The Indianapolis native is on track to graduate in four years and also has decided to add a minor, IU Academic Advisor John Sare said.

“He has also set himself up with a corporate internship next summer, while playing in a baseball summer league,” Sare said. “…As an advisee, (Nolden) is the model student, responsible, mature and hardworking. It is not uncommon for (Nolden) to spend several hours a week in the academic center to be prepared for class.”
