Hoosier men swim to victory, while women fall short to both Penn State and Virginia

Wrapping up the final day of competition, the Indiana University men’s swimming and diving team came out victors against Penn State, 182.5-170.5 and Virginia, 177-176, while the IU women’s team fell to Penn State, 214.5-137.5 and Virginia, 235-117 at the Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.

The duo of junior Jim Barbiere and junior Eric Ress continued to place high for the Hoosiers. Barbiere took second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:07.92 and took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:38.62).

Ress placed second in the 100 backstroke touching the wall at 48.65 and took fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:40.12) behind Barbiere.

In the 200 medley relay, a team of junior James Wells, junior Cody Miller, Schmuhl and senior Daniel Kanorr finished second with a time of 1:30.11.

Clocking in at 20.74 in the 50 free, Kanorr tied for second, while Miller came in ninth (21.28).

Following Ress in the 100 backstroke, Wells touched the wall in seventh with a time of 50.05 and freshman Brent Aarons in eleventh (55.24). Taking first place in the 200 breaststroke was Miller, coming in at 1:58.97, followed by senior Sam Trahin in fourth (2:03.47) and sophomore Ian Boggs in seventh (2:05.92).

In the 100 butterfly, the Hoosiers had a 7-8-9 finish with Wells in seventh (51.66), freshman Tanner Kurz in eighth (51.92) and Schmuhl ninth (51.95).

The Hoosiers dominated the diving events led by Darian Schmidt who won the 1-meter springboard with 399.30 points. Senior Mick Dell’Orco completed the competition in second (327.30), senior Casey Johnson third (293.90) and sophomore Danton Rogers fourth (289.90).

Trahin, school record holder in the 400 individual medley, won the event in the double-dual meet against Penn State and Virginia with a time of 3:54.58. Redshirt senior Nicholas Schwab took eighth in the event with a time of 4:02.58.

In the final event of the day, a team of Kanorr, Ress, Barbiere and Tanner Kurz combined for a time of 3:01.76 in the 400 freestyle relay to finish third.

On the women’s side, juniors Lindsay Vrooman and Browyn Pasloski provided wins for the Hoosiers.

In the 1,000 freestyle, Vrooman narrowly defeated Virginia’s Rachel Naurath to win with a time of 9:49.80. Naurath touched the wall in 9:50.19. Freshman Taylor O’Brien followed in fourth for IU (10:00.16).

Freshman Brooklyn Snodgrass placed second in the 100 backstroke in 55.02, while sophomore Cynthia Pammett placed third (55.43) and sophomore Justine Ress in eighth (57.17). Pammett also took fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.53, with Vrooman in eighth (1:51.57) and Snodgrass ninth (1:52.03).

Junior Sara Delay placed fifth in the 50 freestyle touching the wall at 23.83, with Stephanie Armstrong in tenth (24.19) and Alexis Bullard in eleventh (24.26).

In the 200 breaststroke, Pasloski was victorious as she finished first in 2:15.52, followed by freshman Madeline Maher third (2:16.77) and Specht fourth (2:17.22).

Led by senior Amy Cozad who scored 293.40 points in the women’s 3-meter springboard, IU went 1-2 in the event. Junior Kate Hillman completed the day in second, only a point behind at 292.40.

With a time of 4:22.42, sophomore Dorina Szekeres was the top Hoosier in the 400 IM.

A team of Pammett, Delay, Vrooman and Armstrong finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.98 to end the meet.

The Hoosiers next competition will be the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas from Nov. 29-Dec.1.
