Hoosier swimmers complete day one of first home competition

After the first day of competition in the Hoosiers’ home two-day tri-meet with Penn State and Virginia at the Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, the IU men lead both teams while the IU women trail both teams.

The Indiana University men’s swimming and diving team leads Virgina, 84-83 and Penn State, 87-80. Virginia is ahead of the Nittany Lions, 94-73.

In the opening event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, a team of senior Daniel Kanorr, freshman Tanner Kurz, freshman Jacob Kelzor and freshman John Winck placed fourth with a time of 1:24.82.

Junior Cody Miller and sophomore Steve Schmuhl tied for first place in the 200-yard individual medley event, both hitting the wall at 1:49. 28. Finishing behind in fifth, junior Eric Ress (1:51.26) and in ninth, senior Sam Trahin (1:52.15).

Clocking in at 4:24.15, red-shirt senior Jim Barbiere placed first for IU in the 500 freestyle. After placing first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.20, Miller contributed to the third straight win for the Hoosiers. Sophomore Ian Boggs and sophomore Mike Hurley placed seventh (57.88) and eighth (58.40) respectively.

Ress took first place in the 200 backstroke touching the wall in 1:45.68 and was followed by junior James Wells (9th, 1:51.52) and freshman Brent Aarons (11th, 1:57.70).

In the 200 butterfly, Schmuhl placed third with a time of 1:50.38, followed by Trahin (6th, 1:52.39) and Austin Saunders (8th, 1:54.26).

The Hoosiers finished 1-2 in the 3-meter springboard event with Darian Schmidt placing first with a score of 378.40 and Casey Johnson posting a score of 355.65.

Completing day one for the Hoosiers was a team of Ress, Miller, Schmuhl and Kanorr who finished second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.96).

On the women’s side, the lady Hoosiers trail Penn State 105-62 and Virginia 114-63.

In the 200 freestyle relay, a team of junior Sara Delay, junior Bronwyn Pasloski, sophomore Cynthia Pammett and junior Stephanie Armstrong took third with a time of  1:33.20.

Sophomore Dorina Szekeres was sixth (2:04.51) in the 200 individual medley followed by freshman Brooklyn Snodgrass seventh (2:05.60) and freshman Madeline Maher tenth (2:07.03).

Placing second in the 500 free, junior Lindsay Vrooman clocked in at 4:45.41, with freshman Taylor O’Brien finishing in 10th (4:57.00) and junior Brenna MacLean in 11th (5:05.22). Senior Ashley Specht (1st, 1:01.60) and Pasloski (2nd, 1:02.36) finished 1-2 respectively in the 100 breaststroke.

Finishing third in the 200 backstroke was Pammett with a time of 1:57.61. Szekeres touched the wall in sixth (2:00.47) and sophomore Justine Ress seventh (2:01.00). In the 100 freestyle, Pasloski took eighth (51.61) followed by Armstrong in 10th (51.66).

Senior Amy Cozad and junior Kate Hillman finished 1-2 on the 1-meter springboard. Cozad finished the competition with a score of 274.35 and Hillman (264.80).

Junior Brenna MacLean (2:04.46) and Vrooman (2:06.22) finished ninth and tenth respectively in the 200 butterfly.

In the final event of day one, the 400 medley relay, Pammett, Specht, MacLean and Vrooman combined to place fifth with a time of 3:44.33.

Both teams will compete in the final day of the competition tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.
