Smith-Rivera decommits from Xavier

North Central (Indianapolis) guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera – the No. 25 overall player in the 2012 class according to Rivals.com – confirmed to the IDS that he has decommitted from Xavier.

The news was first reported by Brian Snow of Scout.com.

Smith-Rivera, who currently averages 30.2 points per game for the 5-0 Panthers, originally gave a verbal agreement to play for the Musketeers on Oct. 23.

He said tonight, though, that “I kind of rushed into making my decision.”

“I just wanted to get a feel for some other schools that I was interested in,” Smith-Rivera said.  “I’ll get to take a couple visits and weigh my options a little more.  I realized (the decision) was a little early in the process.”

The 6-foot-3, 210 lb. guard said the list of schools he is considering includes Florida, Miami, Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas and Ohio State.

IU is also in the mix, but they haven’t shown as much interest as of late.  He admitted that might have come because of the commitment to Xavier.

“Maybe they’ll continue to recruit me, but who knows,” Smith-Rivera said.  “I really like the atmosphere there and they’ve shown a lot of love.”

The Hoosiers already have four commitments from the class of 2012.  Two of those – Yogi Ferrell (Park Tudor, Indianapolis) and Ron Patterson (Broad Ripple, Indianapolis) – play the guard position.

Smith-Rivera said he does not see their commitments affecting his decision.

“I think if I went there, I would be able to play as either the one or the two,” Smith-Rivera said.  “I don’t see myself having that designated position.  I think I can play either/or.”

The North Central guard said he has no set timetable for making a college selection.  His only goal is to not rush into anything, like he did with Xavier in late Oct.

“Time will tell,” Smith-Rivera said.  “If I feel like the school is right – whichever one it is – then I will make a commitment.”

I think he is missing the love that schools throw at him during recruitment and his flip/flop on recruiting worries me to. Can you trust his next commitment?
