Senior forward Darren Yeagle scored once with his head and once with his foot Thursday to take down No. 6 Louisville 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament’s opening round.

The Hoosiers fell to the Cardinals 4-0 in the team’s worst showing of the regular season, but was able to turn the tables with gritty defense and the ability to take advantage of rare scoring opportunities.

Louisville posted 13 shots Thursday, but freshman keeper Luis Soffner kept the favored Cardinals out of the net by chalking up two saves, one of which was a one-on-one opportunity against Kenny Walker in the first half.

Four yellow cards were given in the game, three of which were against Louisville for hard fouls, the fourth against Yeagle for delay of game.

The Hoosiers now face Butler at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated IU 2-1 in double-overtime Oct. 7. Butler had a first-round bye.

Men’s soccer team advances to Big Ten Semis, bounces Badgers

On a Will Bruin strike 20 seconds into the second half, the fourth-seeded IU men’s soccer team took a lead it would not give up as it defeated fifth-seeded Wisconsin 2-0 Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Senior forward Darren Yeagle put the game away for good 22 minutes later off a Bruin miss.

IU recorded 22 shots on the game, while Wisconsin only had seven.

Freshman keeper Luis Soffner got the start for IU replacing an injured senior Nemanja Kostic. Soffner benefitted from solid defense as he made his first save of the contest with nine minutes to play in the second half. It was his seventh shutout of the season.

Now 10-8-1, the Hoosiers’ NCAA Tournament hopes become more realistic, as the team’s record is good enough for selection eligibility and the strength of schedule is in the top-10 nationally.

Despite this, the Hoosiers say their eyes are on the program’s 17th Big Ten Championship.

In order to get there, IU has just over 24 hours to rest before meeting first-seeded Ohio State in the semifinal Friday at 2 p.m.

IU fell to Ohio State 1-0 at home Nov. 1.

Hoosiers stun No. 25 Penn State 2-1

On a day full of pomp and circumstance, the IU men’s soccer team was able to resuscitate its season with a 2-1 upset of Big Ten-leading No. 25 Penn State Friday.

After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half, senior forward Lee Hagedorn was able to punch in the game-tying goal off an Andy Adlard corner kick.

Junior midfielder Daniel Kelly beat Penn State keeper Warren Gross 40 seconds into the second half to put the Hoosiers up for good.

IU improves its record to 9-8-1 on a day that seniors Hagedorn, Eric Alexander, Nemanja Kostic and Ofori Sarkodie were honored, as well as former coach Jerry Yeagley who is a member of the most recent class of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Hoosiers spoiled a Penn State Big Ten regular season championship as well as dug themselves out of the conference cellar with Friday’s win.

The Big Ten Tournament kicks off Thursday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Seedings for the tournament will be decided after this week’s conference play.

Men’s soccer falls to OSU 1-0

For the third time this season, IU lost in overtime, this time at the hands of Ohio State 1-0 Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Ohio State’s game-winner came off a scramble in front of the Hoosier goal with 7:26 to play in the first overtime. The goal was credited to Eric Shrigley.

The Hoosiers fall to 8-8-1 (2-3) on the year and have one more game Friday to close out the regular season. The 3 p.m. contest against Penn State is IU’s last opportunity to close out the season above the .500 mark before hosting the Big Ten Tournament next weekend.

For the first time since 1985, IU risks missing the NCAA Tournament.

IU is 1-3-1 in overtime games this year and 4-5-1 in games decided by a goal or less.
