Crushing Defeat in Home Finale For IU

By Pat Hickey | IDS women's soccer writer

Posted at 12:19 am on November 4, 2009 | Print | Share | Comments (0)

The Hoosier women’s soccer team played its’ final regular season game at home Tuesday night against its’ rival No. 23 Purdue (11-5-3, 4-3-2 Big Ten). IU dropped its’ second consecutive home game 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion in the final seconds of the second overtime.

Junior midfielder Chloe McKay put the Hoosiers on the board first. In the 45th minute, sophomore forward Carly Samp received a pass around the left side of the 18 yard box and beat a Purdue defender. She then passed it to the middle of the box to McKay, who was waiting to kick it into the back of the net. It was McKay’s second goal of the year and Samp’s fifth assist in 2009.

Purdue would fire back two minutes later with a shot by Jessica Stellhorn that got past IU goalkeeper Lauren Hollandsworth to tie the game at one a piece.

The two teams would continue to trade opportunities during the second half, but neither team would put the game away.

In the final minute of the second overtime, with 21 seconds remaining, Stellhorn was awarded a free kick after an IU penalty. She sent the kick curving into the box, where Sylvia Forbes got her head on it and found the back of the net for the game-winner.

Hollandsworth finished the game with nine saves, which marks the most of any IU goalkeeper this year.

Overall, Purdue led the time of total possession in the game, and that was made apparent by their 20-12 advantage in total shots. The Boilermakers also came out very physical, and committed 15 fouls overall.

For the Hoosiers, they now drop to 10-6-2, and 2-5-2 Big Ten. They have one remaining regular season game, a Friday match-up at Minnesota at 7 p.m.

Hoosiers Draw Against The Illini

By Pat Hickey | IDS women's soccer writer

There couldn’t have been a more even-keeled game this afternoon between IU and Illinois (5-4-3) at Jerry Yeagley Field. The first two goals of the game were scored in the first ten minutes. Then, both teams held each other scoreless for the remaining 100 minutes of play, including two overtime periods.

Sophomore midfielder Devon Beach got the Hoosiers on the board in the 6th minute, when junior midfielder Chloe McKay sent a through ball near the middle of the 18 yard box that Beach promptly sent to the back of the net. It was her fourth goal of the year, which makes her the team leader in points with 12.

Following a Indiana foul in the 10th minute, Illini sophomore midfielder Marissa Mykines sent a free kick from 25 yards out into the upper left corner to tie the game at one a piece.

Both teams had ample opportunities to take the lead, but none could capitalize on them. Indiana and Illinois finished with 16 shots each.

IU moves to 9-3-1 (1-2-1) on the year.

A last-minute kick from sophomore forward Carly Samp (far right) sails into the back of the Michigan State goal Friday evening. Samp's goal lifted the Hoosiers to a 1-0 victory over the Spartans.

In a game that the Hoosiers dominated for the entire game, out-shooting Michigan State 25-5, it was sophomore forward Carly Samp’s goal with 21 seconds left in the game that was the winner.

The play started with a turnover at midfield.  Freshman forward Orianica Velasquez-Herrera dribbled down the sideline and sent a beautiful cross inside the 18 yard box, where Samp was waiting in point blank range on the right side to send it past the goalkeeper for the game winning goal. It was her fourth goal of the year and a statement victory for the Hoosiers.

“This was a great win for us going forward,” Samp said. “They have two of the best shot scorers in the country and our defense completely shut them down. It was a great team effort for everyone.”

For Michigan State, it was their first loss on the season, as they came into the game 7-0-2. The Hoosiers remain undefeated at home, and 9-3 (1-2) on the year.

Here is a link to the Big Ten Guide, our first sports publication of the year. Take a look, and let us know what you think. We’re really proud of it, and the hard work of the writers really shines through.

It’s a look back at where IU sports have come from and where they are now. It’s a theme that has everything to do with this school’s sports history, which can be best described as nothing other than big.

Big History. Big Ten.

By Pat Hickey | IDS women's soccer writer

EVANSTON, Ill. – The women’s soccer team that had been rolling as of late hit a minor speed bump last night against Northwestern (4-5-1, 1-0 Big Ten). The No. 19 ranked Hoosiers (8-2, 0-1 Big Ten) allowed a late goal in the second half to lose 1-0.

Opportunities were plentiful for the Hoosiers. Freshman forward Orianica Velasquez Herrera had a couple shots on goal early in the first half and senior forward Liz Holby had a chance late in the first half, but it was saved by the Northwestern goalkeeper. In the second half, sophomore forward Carly Samp had a chance on a through ball but she was flagged on a controversial offsides call.

In the 81st minute, Northwestern senior forward Alicia Herczeg was on the receiving end of a free kick and put home a header that proved to be the game winning goal. Herczeg leads the team with four goals and helped mark the second year in a row that IU allowed a late goal to Northwestern. The Wildcats lead the series 9-7-2 now.

The next game for the Hoosiers is Sunday at 1 p.m. Central time at Wisconsin.

The No. 22 ranked Hoosiers hosted the Green Bay Phoenix tonight at Jerry Yeagley Field and wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 2-0 victory to put the team at 8-1 on the year.

Freshman striker Orianica Velasquez-Herrera  scored both goals tonight for IU. In the 14th minute, the Colombia native had a relapse of Wednesday against Butler. When senior defender Christie Kotynski’s shot was blocked by a Phoenix defender, Herrera was patiently waiting in point blank range to send it in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 61st minute, after a terrific display of passing by the Hoosiers, Herrera worked the left side of the box and was tripped up. She received a free penalty kick and rifled it by the goalkeeper on the right side for her second goal of the game and fourth on the season for the 2-0 lead.

The defense did a sound job all 90 minutes, not allowing a single shot by the Green Bay offense.

The Hoosiers next game is next Friday, the 25th, at Northwestern to begin Big Ten play.

More to come later.

Hoosiers come back on the road, again

By Pat Hickey | IDS women's soccer writer

The newly-ranked women’s soccer completed another thrilling come-from-behind victory on Friday night, defeating Hofstra 3-2 in double overtime. IU is now out to a 6-0-0 start, the best start in school history.

Their undefeated season was on the brink, as they trailed 2-0 with only nine minutes left. The senior leadership really came into play. Senior defender Kelly Lawrence took a direct kick from midfield in the 81st minute that took a big bounce off the wet artificial turf in the box and into the upper right corner for the goal. For Lawrence, it was her first goal of the year.

2 defenders collect honors

By Ryan Gregg | IDS sports writer (former)

Posted at 5:10 pm on November 5, 2008 | Print | Share | Comments (0)

Despite a rough season by the IU women’s soccer team, the squad still pulled away with Big Ten honors for two of their individuals.

Defender Kelly Lawrence was named First Team All-Big Ten. The junior becomes the third Hoosier all-time to earn first team conference honors, and is just the second to win the honor in consecutive seasons. The is Lawrence’s third conference honor after being named to Big Ten’s second team as a freshman.

Fellow defender, Kelly Krawczak, was named to the Big Ten’s freshman team. Krawczak played every minute at center back during Big Ten play for the Hoosiers.

The tandem of Lawrence and Krawczak helped solidify one of the best back lines in the conference. The Hoosiers let up eight goals in their 10 conference games. And in their late push to maybe sneak through the back door into the Big Ten Tournament, IU shut out their last three opponents 1-0.

The full press release is below:
