For IU’s game against Illinois on Thursday night, I decided to try something a little different. I photograph a lot of basketball in the winter months, and after a while the shots begin to look very similar. In order to change it up a bit, I shot the entire game from above the court level. This helped create a better background in the images with the yellow color of the court instead of the green-tinted walls and seats. In addition, it’s nice to try a different angle once in a while to mix it up.

I was able to do this at the women’s game due to the low attendance at the game due in part to the winter storm raging outside the confines of Assembly Hall. Usually at basketball games, we have an assigned spot on the floor (spot No. 7 next to IU’s trainer Tim Garl), but on Thursday I shot from a spot below IU’s championship banners in the South end of the hall. Later in the game I moved into seats perpendicular to the basket. In order to compensate for being farther away from the court, I used a Nikon 300 mm f/2.8 lens instead of a 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens that I normally use on the floor. Here’s the results:

A lone fan watches the action from an empty section during a NCAA women's basketball game between IU and Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Assembly Hall. Bad weather and Christmas break contributed to an extremely sparse crowd at the game although the official attendance was listed at 1,350. (James Brosher | IDS)
