For the last post of 2010, we bring to you 16 of the best photos our staff has produced this semester. Of course, these aren’t all of our best work; for that, take another look at what we’ve posted throughout the year on here and at idsnews.com.
That’s it for this semester. Courtney Deckard will continue to edit photos in the spring, and joining her will be new IDS photo editor Chasity “Chaz” Mottinger. I wish them the best, as I will be photo editor at the Arbutus yearbook (with frequent contributions to the IDS).
Happy New Year!

This is the penultimate Photos of the Week post of the semester. Watch in the following weeks for the year’s best photos and a few things we missed over the last four months.
Our multimedia offerings this week include men’s basketball’s loss to Boston College and victory over Savannah State; the Musical Arts Center production of The Nutcracker, and Our Week (+20%) in Photos.

Classes at IU didn’t happen last Wednesday through Sunday (and likely schoolwork, as well), but the photo opportunities continued. Here we present the news you may have missed during the preparation, enjoyment, and consequences (cleaning, sleep, eating leftovers) of Thanksgiving. Men’s cross country placed seventh in the NCAA national meet, shoppers stormed stores early on Black Friday, men’s basketball won against Northwestern State and NC Central, volleyball made the NCAA tournament before winning their final home game against Wisconsin, football won the Old Oaken Bucket, and Bill Lynch was fired (video).

or The Best of IUDM 2010
Last weekend was the philanthropy event to beat all philanthropy events: IU Dance Marathon. The annual fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis grossed $1,602,713.20, breaking last year’s fundraising record by more than $80,000. We sent seven photographers to the 36-hour event, where participants danced, played games, and generally did everything but sit down. (And when they did sit down, they were run off and told to keep moving.) Below are 11 of the best photos from an event put on “for the kids.” (More photos appear here, along with video.)
The IDS publishes Monday and then is off the rest of Thanksgiving week. Watch idsnews.com for continued updates, including photos of the men’s cross-country team at the Division I NCAA national meet in Terre Haute. Happy Thanksgiving!

or These Are Not Our Photos
We’re going to do things a little differently this week. As you guys might have noticed (maybe on your own, maybe through post-office closings), Thursday was Veterans Day. The IDS did some pretty cool things Thursday in commemoration of the holiday, all of them through Biz Carson and Tom Miller’s project through most of the IU Student Media outlets. They had multiple pages in the print edition, as well as an Inside magazine interactive with photos, video and audio from 12 veterans attending IU. In the process, we received lots of courtesy photos from soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. We showcase the best here.
Be sure to check out all the other multimedia on the IDS site: last weekend’s sports action, the Rock the Runway benefit, photos from the basketball team’s overtime exhibition victory against Ferris State and Hay Fever rehearsals, Our Week in Photos, and our basketball reporters’ chat with new recruit Cody Zeller. (It’s in Clapper mode, so click it once to pause and twice to resume.)

The census was geared to finding out general information on the Iraqi household and to see if they have any concerns or questions they can help with. The mission was part of the continuing support of the 1-1 Armored Division. 1-1AD is deployed with I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar province of Iraq (Multi National Forces-West) to develop the Iraqi security forces, facilitate the development of official rule of law through democratic government reforms, and continue the development of a market-based economy centered on Iraqi reconstruction. or A Look Back at the Election
The theme for this post, as you can tell from the subhead, is Tuesday night’s election. We sent photographers to Indianapolis for Brad Ellsworth (Chaz Mottinger) and Dan Coats (Rabi Abonour); to Seymour for Baron Hill (Olivia Elsner); to Bloomington’s KRC Catering for Todd Young (Alex Farris and Peter Stevenson); and to Kilroy’s on Kirkwood for Greg Knott (Ted Somerville). We rushed everything that we could into Wednesday’s paper, but now that we have time we’d like to give a few more visuals gifts.
So, we present to you the best of Election Night ‘10. In the interest of fairness, we provide two photos from each candidate, with two exceptions: 1) Elsner’s glasses photo provides a good summary of the entire night; and 2) Somerville’s photo of Greg Knott says everything that needs to be said.

This week we have for you three awesome things: and awesome mass of people at the Passion Pit concert, an awesome volleyball player in a dominating weekend, and an awesome fishing club before an upcoming tournament.
On the photo-gallery side, we have the rest of the Passion Pit photos, rehearsals for The Wiz, Butler’s defeat of the men’s soccer team, and a Safe Halloween. And, of course, Our Week in Photos. Our two videos this week are of IU’s section of the Thrill the World worldwide dance and the campus premiere of the film “My Suicide”.

or The Little Moments of Homecoming
As was done a few times before, this Photos of the Week post focuses on a specific kind of picture. This time, it’s the small things that people don’t usually look for at each event. Each photo pays tribute to the photojournalistic guideline to capture, not only what people would have seen had they been there, but also what they didn’t see even if they attended. A huge thanks go out to all our photographers (ten in all) who covered the events throughout the weekend. (One of them, Peter Stevenson, also balanced a stringer job for The New York Times and got a photo to go with their coverage of the close congressional races across the country.)
On the multimedia side of Homecoming, we have a video from Charles Scudder of Homecoming weekend then and now (which was retweeted by the IU Alumni Association, Indiana University and IU Bloomington) and one from Steph Langan and Rabi Abonour covering the Homecoming Parade specifically. Scudder also contributed a video of the IU Auditorium’s Bend and Snap competition, which gave free tickets to one of the week’s Legally Blonde: The Musical performances.
That’s all for now. Be sure to see all the photos that made today’s paper in Our Week in Photos, as well as photo galleries of all Homecoming-related events and of the weekend’s other sports action.

This week’s best photos (according to the photo desk) come from three places: University Gym, where the IU volleyball team beat No. 4-ranked Penn State for the first time in program history; Seventh Street, where supporters of Palestinians joined nationwide Free Palestine Walks; and Dunn Meadow, where students and supporters gathered in solidarity for those suffering from discrimination based on sexual orientation.
On the multimedia side, we’ve had another banner week with two videos and six photo galleries. The galleries showcase more of the volleyball team’s victories this weekend, the football team’s blowout at the hands of Ohio State, the myriad acts in Big Man on Campus, more photos of the SAGE vigil, the frantic runners of the Nearly Naked Mile and the Homecoming pep rally/talent show Yell Like Hell. SAGE and the Mile got doublecoverage from new multimedia star Charles Scudder (with an assist from Chet Strange). Make sure to watch the NNM video and see the water spewing from a Showalter fish fall to the ground. (Look to the right when the shot begins.) Use the Clapper Method on the NNM video; fortunately, the navigation bar is slightly visible in the SAGE video.
Watch for more multimedia from Scudder at the end of Homecoming weekend, as well as photos from the parade, Hoosier Hysteria and the football game. Enjoy your weekend.

This week’s post is super-mega-big. There are two reasons for this:
1) We felt like we could post five good photos from the paper instead of the usual three. (The other 54 appear here.) All four daily writing desks are represented in a variety of shots. Arts gets Thursday’s P1 centerpiece photo of a well-lit rehearsal for “A Choreographer’s Evening”, campus gets a compelling storytelling photo of Take Back the Night, city/state gets an internal frame on a maintenance guy changing Christmas lights, and sports gets an action shot taken during the men’s soccer team’s draw against Wisconsin. And the photo desk had an in-house contest to see who could take the best fall photo Thursday.
Lots of photo and video product for you to absorb. Happy viewing!
