Waddell Hamer
In the little contact that me and Dave had, he meant alot to me. He was always very encouraging and helpful to me as a writer and a student. We met at a college journalism conference 4 yrs ago and he encouraged me to transfer to IU and for that i am grateful. I just think of how much he meant to me in the contact that we had and one can only imagine the impact he had on other lives. You will be greatly missed here on earth, but heaven has a good man.

Dave will always have a place in my heart as I was the first out gay man to work on staff at the Indiana Daily Student back in 1993. When I was outed in the newsroom and had my ability as a journalist questioned, Dave stood by me and supported me throughout one hell of a fall semester.
He helped me attend a National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association convention the following year and even as he was struggling to come to terms with his being gay, he always had a smile whenever we talked.
I am the journalist I am today in large part to his tutelage.

What a giant in the college media world! What a legacy that could be infinite, as those he taught share his tutelage with others and so on and so on. College media advisers nationwide are joyous about Dave’s contributions and I hope inspired to likewise serve our students.

I’m sure Dave would have been happy seeing how all of you at the IDS are responding to this unfortunate event using the tools of the trade as they have converged. I think that in itself represents a legacy for him.
