Man accused of robbing ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in early April arrested

A Bloomington woman told police she was robbed and threatened at gunpoint April 2 by her ex-boyfriend. Michael Akins, 40, was arrested Thursday morning.

Akins allegedly punched the woman’s new boyfriend in the face and threatened to kill the couple before leaving with a phone and tablet during the April 2 robbery.

Police received a tip that Akins was staying at his ex-girlfriend’s home, the house he robbed in early April.

When officers arrived at the house, the man’s ex-girlfriend told them he was upstairs. Officers reportedly went upstairs and noticed a window screen was cut out.

They looked out the window and saw Akins running down the street, Bloomington Police Department Capt. Steve Kellams said.

Officers arrested him in the 1200 block of West 11th Street.

His ex-girlfriend told officers she didn’t call the police when Akins returned because she was afraid of him.

Akins was charged with burglary, robbery, criminal confinement, domestic battery, battery, pointing a firearm at someone and theft. He also faces charges from prior warrants.
