Men's soccer earns national accolades

After a weekend that saw IU improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2004, national honors were bestowed upon the Hoosiers.

IU junior midfielder Trevor Swartz was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Team of the Week. Swartz scored a penalty kick in each game of the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic as the Hoosiers scored eight goals in the two matches, winning the tournament for the 14th time.

This is the first such honor for the Cameron Park, California, native. Last week, junior defender Andrew Gutman was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.

Previously, Swartz was starting in the middle of the midfield for IU, but this weekend, he started both matches on the left wing. Swartz is coming off a 2016 season in which he scored five goals and was tied for the team lead with three assists.

In addition to the honor for Swartz, the Hoosiers also moved up to No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches rankings. IU is the highest-ranked Big Ten team and is one spot ahead of this week’s opponent, the Maryland Terrapins. In last year's meeting, IU and Maryland played to a 1-1 draw in Bloomington.
