Freshman guard Ria Gulley will transfer from the IU women’s basketball program to a school closer to her home and family, according to a release from IU Athletics.

Gulley, a native of San Antonio, appeared in 32 games and started in five for IU this season. She played an average of 13.6 minutes per game and scored 3.1 points per game.

“I’m extremely blessed to have received the opportunity to play at Indiana University,” Gulley said in a release. “I’m nothing but thankful for the hospitality shown. However, I need to be closer to my family.”

Gulley was one of three freshmen who played for IU this season and averaged the most minutes per game among any Hoosier bench player. She made 20 3-pointers, good for fourth-most on the team, and shot 34.5 percent from deep.

IU Coach Teri Moren said she is grateful for Gulley’s contributions to the program in a release. With Gulley’s departure, IU will lose seven players from the 2016-17 team that set a school record with 23 wins.

“Ria met with me and expressed her desire to leave Indiana to move closer to her family,” Moren said. “We are grateful for the contributions she made to our program and wish her well in her future endeavors.”
