IU freshman catcher Jake Matheny was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the opening week of the season, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Matheny hit a pair of two-run home runs for four RBI against Gonzaga on Friday evening and then hit an RBI double against Gonzaga again on Sunday.
The Hoosiers won both games, by a final of 12-3 on Friday and 5-1 on Sunday.
The freshman’s Friday start against Gonzaga marked his first career game with IU.
Matheny’s first home run came in his first collegiate at-bat, making the dinger his first hit, run scored and RBI in an IU uniform.
The last Hoosier to earn the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor was current junior Logan Sowers, who was recognized May 18, 2015.
